Leatherneck Volleyball Stifled By Coyotes

Western Illinois fell 3-0.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team dropped its final home match of October 3-0 to University of South Dakota. With the defeat, the Purple and Gold fall to 1-22 (0-10) while the Coyotes improve to 15-8 (9-2).

Before the match, the Leatherneck volleyball team welcomed 35 Special Olympic athletes to hone their volleyball skills.

Matt Fletcher, one of the athletes, described the practice "amazing" and that he "wants to do it again tomorrow."

"I had an amazing time. I loved being able to make new friends with the players," Fletcher said, with an ear-to-ear grin. "I want to do this every single day."

As they donned the pink uniforms, the Leathernecks dropped the first set against the Coyotes, 25-18. With the score knotted at 10 points, the Coyotes went on a 6-1 run and took a 16-11 advantage. South Dakota took the final seven out of ten points to win the set, 25-18.

With the scored tied at four points, Emma Norris gave the Leathernecks the 5-4 advantage after burying a ball in the corner of the court.  Melanie Patenaude pulled the Leathernecks within three points after recording a kill, but the Purple and Gold could not complete the comeback. After Mariah Mitchell scored on a ball from Jaime Johnson, WIU found itself down 22-20, but the Coyotes took the set 25-20.

The Leathernecks quickly jumped on top in the third set after taking a 6-1 advantage, but South Dakota scored five-straight to tie up the game at six points. With Western Illinois up 9-6, Cassie Hunt served a ball South Dakota could not touch and put the Leathernecks up four, 10-6. The Coyotes rallied and took the lead 19-16 and did not look back and took the third, 25-18.

Norris led the Leathernecks with nine kills, while Dieter logged eight. Johnson paced Western Illinois with 16 assists. WIU is back on the court on the road against Oral Roberts on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 1 p.m.
