Leatherneck Volleyball Downed At Oral Roberts

WIU fell 3-0 against the Golden Eagles.

TULSA, Okla.- Madeline Dieter led the Leathernecks with eight kills and a .500 hitting percentage, but it was not enough as the Western Illinois volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Sunday (Oct. 28).

Western Illinois jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the first set after Mackenzie Steckler, Melanie Patenaude and Shiah Sanders all recorded kills. The Golden Eagles rebounded and scored four-straight points to take a 7-4 lead. Western Illinois cut the lead to just two points midway through the set after Mariah Mitchell scored and Emma Norris collected an ace, but it was the closest the Purple and Gold found itself. Oral Roberts won the last four points to win,  25-18.

The Golden Eagles continued to ride their momentum in the second set as they took a 6-1 advantage. After an attacking error by Oral Roberts and a Sanders kill, the Leathernecks cut the lead to 13-9. Oral Roberts extended the lead back out to five and eventually took the set, 25-26. Trying to force a fourth set, the Leathernecks fought early in the game and took their first lead since the first set at 7-6.WIU held a 13-12 advantage, but Oral Roberts took five of the next seven points to regain the lead. Up 22-19, ORU won the final three points to win 25-19.

Claire Grove led the Leathernecks with 17 digs, while Jaime Johnson recorded 19 assists. The Leathernecks are back on the court on Thursday (Nov. 1) at North Dakota.
