Summit League

WELCOME HOME: Western Illinois returns from an eight-game road trip this weekend, playing host to South Dakota State... The Summit League series opens four straight at home for the Leathernecks... Western, currently 5-3 at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium this year, is scheduled to play 11 of the final 21 games at home - including nine of those against a conference opponent.

LAST YEAR: Western Illinois took 2-of-3 at home against South Dakota State, winning the opener and finale 3-2 and 2-0, respectively, but losing game two 11-3... Six weeks later in Brookings, the Leathernecks won the series again by the same scenario. Western won the opener 5-1 and the finale 3-1 but lost game two 6-3.

LAST TIME OUT: Deion Thompson reached base safely in all four plate appearances, including a new career-high of three hits, but the Leathernecks dropped a 4-1 decision Tuesday at Iowa... Western out-hit Iowa 10-7 on the night... Roman Visintine added two hits and a RBI... Ian Koch, Matthew Sturchio and Nate Westfahl all threw an inning of shutout relief.

NUMBERS ON THE RISE: Since starting the year 0-11, Western is 9-10 following the recent loss at Iowa… Western jumped its batting average up to .275 and fielding percentage to .965 while lowering the ERA to 3.49... Ben Sellers is 5-of-12 at the plate, followed by Steve McShane also hitting over .400 in that span (.407, 11-of-27)... Johnathan Fleek is at .361, followed by Adam McGinnis at .350, Mitch Ellis at .322, and Chris Tschida increasing to .304... Fleek (7 walks/6 strikeouts) and McGinnis (16 walks/5 strikeouts) both have a higher walk to strikeout ratio... Western has turned 19 double plays in those 19 games... Everyone with at least eight innings pitched in that span has an ERA at 5.79 or lower while holding opponents to a .236 batting average... Four of Western's nine wins have come when scoring nine or more runs... Western's three weekend starting pitchers (Ian Koch, Preston Church and Javin Drake) have combined for 59 strikeouts in 87.2 innings.

WESTFAHL SAVES THE DAY: Senior Nate Westfahl picked up his second save of the year following the 5-2 win at Oral Roberts… His seven saves gives him sole possession of third place all-time… He needs two more to tie Brian Loconsole for second place... His five season saves in 2016 tied him for third-most by a Leatherneck.

DIAMOND STEALING: Western continues to lead The Summit League in stolen bases, and the margin continues to grow... The Leathernecks are 52-of-74 this year, including 15 steals in 12 conference games... The next closest in The Summit League is Oral Roberts with 33 in 41 attempts... Johnathan Fleek leads the team with seven steal as 11 Leathernecks have at least three stolen bases... Cord Church is next at 6-for-6, followed by Deion Thompson and Steve McShane both at 5-of-6... Adam McGinnis (4-7), Mitch Ellis (4-7), Roman Visintine (4-7), and Chris Tschida (4-5) are next.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Western leads The Summit League and rank 52nd averaging 0.93 double plays turned per game… Western's 1.73 stolen bases average lead the conference and ranks 22nd nationally… Ian Koch's eight starts tie for The Summit League lead and 28th nationally... Adam McGinnis also lead the Summit and stands 81st nationally with a .465 on-base percentage. He is third in the league and 74th in the country with a 11.6 toughest to strikeout ratio... Roman Visintine is 50th nationally with his Summit-leading three triples... Deion Thompson is second in the league with two triples (in as many games)... As a team, Western is second in triples with eight and is 93rd nationally.

BACK-TO-BACK JACKS: Western Illinois accomplished a feat not done since March 2008 when in the first inning of game two at Southeast Missouri Adam McGinnis and Drue Galassi hit consecutive home runs… McGinnis launched a 2-run shot followed by Galassi's solo homer… Not to be outdone, another pair of Leatherneck teammates accomplished the same feat at home versus North Dakota State. Mitch Ellis and Deion Thompson both hit solo homers in game one of the series… It was the first time since Cooper Stewart (3-run) and Tyler Metcalf hit back-to-back jacks at Oklahoma.

HIT FOR THE CYCLE, SORT OF: Sophomore Drue Galassi enjoyed a productive day at the plate on Saturday in a doubleheader against #14 Texas Tech and Mississippi State... He earned the start in game one batting seventh. After starting 0-for-2, Galassi lined a RBI triple in the seventh inning. During the ninth inning with two outs, Galassi turned on a 3-2 pitch and launched it well over the right field fence... In the nightcap against the Bulldogs, Galassi batted fourth. He doubled and scored in the fourth inning then singled and stole a base in the sixth.

D1BASEBALL.COM PLAYERS TO WATCH: According to the Preseason Summit League preview by D1Baseball.com, seniors Adam McGinnis (C) and Preston Church (LHP) were two of the top 10 prospects in the 2017 MLB Draft Class... Sophomore Deion Thompson was ranked fourth of the five prospects for the 2018 Draft... Freshman right-handed pitcher Javin Drake was one of five Impact Freshman chosen by the website.

Fitzpatrick played in all 11 games last season as a defensive back. He made 19 tackles on the year, 16 of which were solos, and broke up three passes. Fitzpatrick recorded a career-high seven tackles against Northern Arizona and South Dakota State.

TSCHIDA REWRITING CAREER RECORDS: Senior Chris Tschida recorded a base hit at Iowa during the midweek game, moving him into a tie for fifth place on the career 'Top 10' list with WIU Hall of Famer Steve Jeffers...
