Baseball Picks up Doubleheader Split at Dayton

Leathernecks rally in game one, nearly come back again in nightcap

DAYTON, Ohio – Western Illinois staged a ninth inning rally in game one of Sunday's (March 12) doubleheader to win in extra innings, and nearly had another late comeback, but eventually split the games.

The Leathernecks (1-12 overall) won the opener against Dayton (5-8) 7-5 but fell in the nightcap 4-1.

Game 1 – Western Illinois 7, Dayton 5 (10 innings)
The Flyers got on the board with a RBI single in the first. Back-to-back solo home runs by Brandon Smith and Maverick Prine in the fourth extended the lead to 3-0. Smith added another solo shot in the fifth for a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth Western staged a rally to tie the score. Mitch Ellis walked to start, Deion Thompson was hit by a pitch, and Conner Currier walked to load the bases with no one out. Two batters later Roman Visintine lined a 2-run double. Adam McGinnis walked to reload the bases, then again two batters later Johnathan Fleek delivered a 2-run single to even the score.

The Flyers had two runners on, but a single and error allowed Dayton to take a 5-4 lead in the eighth. Sam Cottingham-Beard recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

Just like the sixth inning, Ellis walked to start the ninth inning rally. The junior walked and stole second base two batters later. Currier lined a RBI double to tie the score, but Western could not push across the go-ahead run. Cottingham-Beard struck out the side in the ninth to send it to extras.

C.J. Schaeffer walked to start the 10th inning. Drue Galassi singled, a wild pitch moved Schaeffer to third and pinch-hitter Nick Schrader walked to load the bases. Chris Tschida reached on a fielder's choice to score the eventual game-winning run. When he stole second base, Galassi was able to score on an error by the catcher making it 7-5.

Cottingham-Beard (1-0) closed out the 10th to earn the win on his career-best seventh strikeout. He allowed one unearned run on two hits in 3.2 innings. Starter Preston Church allowed three runs on four hits in four innings. Connor Rektorski allowed a run in 1.1 innings and Pete Minella pitched a scoreless inning.

Galassi matched a career-high of three hits. Currier recorded his first multi-hit game of the year, finishing with two hits along with two walks. Ellis walked three times and scored twice. Visintine contributed two hits and matched a career-high of two RBI.

Dom Golubiewski (0-1) suffered the loss. Smith had two of Dayton's eight hits.

Game 2 – Dayton 4, Western Illinois 1

Dayton started off the third inning with a single and error moving the runner to second base. A balk moved the runner to third, and later in the frame on a double steal Dayton struck first 1-0.

Western threatened in its half of the fourth. Austin Emanuel singled to start the inning. Tschida lined a double to the fence, but Emanuel was thrown out at home trying to score.

The Flyers loaded the bases in the fourth with one out, and an error allowed two runs to score. A sacrifice fly made it a 4-0 lead.

The Leathernecks loaded the bases in their half of the sixth. Cord Church drew a two-out bases loaded walk cutting the deficit to 4-1.

Both teams had runners in scoring position during the remainder of the game, especially when Western had a chance again in the ninth to tie.

With one out and down in the count 0-2, pinch-hitter Ben Sellers battled back to draw a walk. Galassi, who entered as a pinch-hitter, walked then the bases were loaded when McGinnis was hit on a 0-2 pitch.

Jason Johnson entered the game, and recorded a strikeout and flyball to secure Dayton's win with his first save.

Tschida finished with two of Western's seven hits. Javin Drake (0-4) gave up four runs – only one earned – on two hits in 3.1 innings. He walked five and struck out five. J.T. Baksha pitched 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, and Matthew Sturchio pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Mason Kutruff (1-1) allowed one run on six hits in five innings. Three Dayton relievers blanked Western over the final four innings. Five different Flyers recorded a base hit.

"We did a good job getting back into the games today. Our guys were a little more relaxed. They still need to have a better approach at the plate. When we forced the pitcher to get in the zone, we had better at-bats and drew some walks. Our hitters are productive hitters when they have the right approach," said Leatherneck head coach Ryan Brownlee. "Sam looked great on the mound in game one. All our pitchers gave us a chance to win the game. They kept the score down, didn't let it get out of control, and gave our offense an opportunity to comeback. It has been much better the last two weekends. If you can hold the other team to three or four runs a game, you always have a chance to get back into the game."

With the revised schedule, Western will travel to Butler for a single game on Monday (March 13) at 2 p.m. central. The Kent State midweek series has been cancelled, and instead WIU will play host to Robert Morris for a 2 p.m. game Wednesday at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
