Leathernecks’ Rally Comes Up Short

Western scores in the ninth but lose 7-6

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Western Illinois had the go-ahead runs in scoring position in the ninth inning, but the Leathernecks came up short in a 7-6 decision at Saint Louis on Wednesday (March 15).

In a game that was scheduled due to inclement weather in the Macomb area, Western saw the Billikens (14-2 overall) jump out to a 3-0 lead after three innings.

The Leathernecks got on board in the fourth when Adam McGinnis doubled and scored on a RBI single from Johnathan Fleek. SLU added two more runs in its half of the fourth to go ahead 5-1. Then another rally in the sixth by Western tied the score.

Roman Visintine walked with one out and stole a season-high two bases during McGinnis' at-bat. A walk on a 3-2 pitch put runners on the corners. Chris Tschida cleared the bases with his seventh career triple, making it 5-3.

Fleek singled to right and scored Tschida. A wild pitch moved him into scoring position, then Mitch Ellis followed with a single to once again put runners on the corners with one out. Conner Currier's RBI single tied the game.

Western had a chance to go ahead in the seventh but could not plate a runner at third with two outs. SLU loaded the bases with one out. Matthew Sturchio, who came on in relief, got a ground ball but the defense just missed on turning an inning-ending double play and the Billikens took a 6-5 lead.

A wild pitch in the eighth allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.

Currier singled to start the ninth inning rally. A groundout moved him to second, then Ben Sellers picked up his first collegiate base hit on a single to put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitting Nick Schrader lined a RBI single to make it 7-6.

A passed ball put both runners in scoring position. Ryan Lefner earned his fourth save of the year when he recorded a strikeout and groundout to end Western's (1-13) threat.

Fleek matched a season-high of three hits and two RBI. Currier turned in his second multi-hit game in his last three contests, scoring a run and driving one in. Tschida added a season-high two RBI.

Sam Cottingham-Beard started – the first of seven WIU pitchers in the game - and allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. J.T. Baksha (0-2) gave up a run on no hits in an inning, but walked two.

Western out-hit SLU 11-9 in the game. Two Billikens had two hits each. Aaron Patton improved to 3-0 with no runs and three hits allowed in 1.2 innings.

The Leathernecks open Summit League play, and their home schedule, on Friday afternoon (March 17) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
