Track and Field Sets Six New Top-Ten Marks at GVSU Big Meet

Leathernecks split squads tomorrow (Feb. 11)

ALLENDALE, Mich. –
The Western Illinois track and field team rewrote the record books at the GVSU Big Meet on Friday (Feb. 10) as they set six new top-ten marks.
 
Malachi Adams set two new top-ten marks for the second time this season in the 60 and 200. Adams raced to a second-place finish in the 200 with a time of 21.54 to rank third in program history. He also won the 60 with a blazing time of 6.78 to best his second all-time ranking in program history. Adams ran 6.79 earlier this season.
 
For the second straight week, Alyssa Johnson worked her way up in the ranks in the 800. The senior cruised to a three-second personal best time of 2:10.24 to rank third in WIU history.
 
Also for the second straight meet, the women's 4x400 team placed themselves in the top-ten. Johnson, along with Bo Brasseur, Kaliyah Cobb and Jaclyn Finney ran 3:52.77 to rank third in the Western Illinois record book. Cobb ran 25.48 on the oversized track to rank ninth all-time, while Jaclyn Finney ran 1:37.26 in the 600 to rank 10th all-time.
 
Matt Simmons collected a win in the men's triple jump, leaping to a new personal best of 46-0 1/2 (14.03m). Tevin Taylor also set a new personal best of 44-8 1/4 (13.62m).
 
Nicole Beebe paced the Leathernecks in her first indoor 5,000 with a time of 18:22.45. Lucas Lingle led for the men in 15:38.78 while Grant Kaiser set an 18-second personal best of 16:11.03.

The men placed in a tie for 10th overall with 18 points, while the women placed 12th with 16. As a team, the Leathernecks placed 10th overall with a combined 34 points.
 
Action at the GVSU Big Meet continues tomorrow (Feb. 11) at 9 a.m. with the field events. The Leathernecks will also be competing at the Fighting Scot Invitational at nearby Monmouth College.
