Western Drops Game One in Tulsa

Conner Currier and Adam McGinnis recorded two hits

TULSA, Okla. – Western Illinois could not answer a six-run fourth inning by Oral Roberts, dropping the Summit League series opener 13-4 on Friday night. The Leathernecks dropped to 13-28 overall and 10-12 in the Summit League.

Oral Roberts threatened in the first and third inning, but Leatherneck starter Ian Koch got a ground ball double play to end both scoring threats. However, the Golden Eagles broke the game open in the fourth.

With one out, ORU loaded the bases on a walk and two singles. From there three singles, a sac bunt and double accounted for the six runs.

Nathan Pollock delivered a RBI single with two down in the fifth. The Golden Eagles added a run in the fifth and sixth to make it 8-1.

Cord Church hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, then later in the inning Roman Visintine doubled and the bases were eventually loaded with two outs. However, a groundout ended Western's threat. ORU added another run on a two out single in the seventh.

Adam McGinnis led off the eighth getting hit by a pitch, then after that Nick Schrader lined a single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Currier brought home a run on a groundout as did Pollock to make it 9-4. ORU tacked on four runs in its half of the eighth to secure the win.

Koch (3-6) was charged for seven runs on nine hits in four innings. Currier and McGinnis recorded two hits as eight of the nine starters picked up a base hit.

Bryce Howe (4-3) allowed one run on five hits in six innings. Four Golden Eagles (27-16, 16-6) had multiple hits, led by Nick Rotola's three hits.
