Baseball Loses 6-5 at ORU

Roman Visintine and Conner Currier record three hits each

TULSA, Okla. – Western Illinois rallied from a five run deficit, but a late home run proved to be the difference as the Leathernecks dropped a 6-5 decision at Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon (May 7).

The Leathernecks out-hit Oral Roberts 10-9 and took advantage of four errors to score their five runs.

ORU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on three hits. Western threatened in the third when Mark Garton led off with a single. With two outs Roman Visintine singled to put a pair of runners on but Western (13-29 overall, 10-13 Summit League) came away empty.

The Golden Eagles (28-16, 17-6) added two more runs in the third for a 5-0 lead. In the fourth, Western took advantage of three ORU errors to plate four runs. Deion Thompson and Adam McGinnis both reached on an error to start the inning. With one out, Conner Currier singled to load the bases. Thompson scored on a wild pitch then Garton singled to score McGinnis making it 5-2.

Currier scored on a balk and Garton eventually scored when Nathan Pollock reached on an error cutting the deficit to 5-4.

McGinnis tied the game in the fifth with his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left field. Western loaded the bases in the seventh but could not push across the go-ahead run. Noah Cummings hit a one-out solo home run in the seventh for what proved to be the final margin.

Visintine singled in the eighth and took second on an error. Chris Tschida got hit by a pitch, then Thompson sacrificed both runners into scoring position. ORU picked up a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

Currier and Visintine recorded three hits apiece and Garton added two. Jordan Pannell (1-2) allowed just one run on two hits in 4.1 innings. Starter Sam Cottingham-Beard was charged for five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.

Three ORU batters had two hits each. Starter Nick Wood allowed five runs in 4.2 innings. Nathan Garza improved to 1-0, throwing 1.2 innings of relief. Brady Womacks earned his ninth save pitching a scoreless ninth.
