Baseball Drops Finale at ORU

Adam McGinnis records a season-high three hits

TULSA, Okla. – Adam McGinnis recorded a season-high three hits, but Western Illinois wound up dropping the Summit League series finale at Oral Roberts 6-1 on Sunday (May 8).

The Golden Eagles got on the board first with a RBI groundout. They threatened in the second but Matthew Sturchio worked out of the bases loaded jam with a strikeout. Cord Church got Western's lone extra base hit of the game, a double in the third, but was stranded at third base.

In the fourth, ORU loaded the bases again and wound up with three runs on a pair of singles to make it 4-0.

Mark Garton and Justin Fitzpatrick singled with one out in the fifth but Western (13-30 overall, 10-14 Summit League) came up empty. During ORU's half of the inning a sacrifice fly made it 5-0.

Conner Currier got hit by a pitch and Garton singled to start the seventh inning, and eventually got into scoring position, but ORU was able to get a groundout and strikeout to end the threat. The Leathernecks got on the scoreboard in the eighth.

Chris Tschida singled then two batters later McGinnis singled. Nick Schrader walked to load the bases with one out. Currier delivered a RBI single making it 5-1, extending his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games. However, a groundout and strikeout finished the inning. ORU added an insurance run in the eighth for the final margin.

McGinnis finished 3-for-4 on the day – and 6-for-13 on the weekend - while Garton added two hits. Sturchio (0-1) allowed four runs on nine hits in four innings. Ricky Digrugilliers pitched two hitless innings of relief.

Cale Tims (5-1) pitched 6.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts. Three Golden Eagles (29-16, 18-6) finished with three hits apiece.

Western will take a break from action this week due to finals. The Leathernecks return to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium this weekend for a three-game series against Omaha, starting Friday afternoon (May 13) at 3 p.m.
