Leathernecks Out Hit Iowa but Drop Midweek Game

Western records 13 hits, led by Chris Tschida’s three.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Western Illinois out-hit Iowa on Tuesday night, but the Hawkeyes wound up scoring nine unanswered runs during the middle innings in a 10-4 decision at Duane Banks Field.

The Leathernecks (13-27) jumped on the scoreboard during the first inning. Chris Tschida lined a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a single. Deion Thompson executed the hit-and-run with one out to put runners on the corners. Adam McGinnis followed with a bunt up the first base line as Tschida broke for home and scored for a 1-0 lead.

Western missed on an opportunity in the second. Conner Currier singled followed by a Mark Garton single. The Leathernecks missed on a hit-and-run opportunity, getting a runner thrown out at third and eventually came away empty.

"We miss a hit and run there. We don't sacrifice a lot and that's why that is open, all we have to do is move the ball. That breaks the game open then we have first and third and still no one out," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We had opportunities early on to break the game open. You had a chance to give yourself a pretty good cushion early, then that puts a little more pressure on them.

Iowa used a hit by pitch and single to put runners on the corners with two out in the second. A high chopper just went off the top of the glove of pitcher Ricky Digrugilliers and the Hawkeyes were able to tie the score at 1-all.

In the third, Roman Visintine and Tschida singled to start the inning and put runners on the corners. Iowa went to the bullpen for Luke Vandermaten. After two outs, Nick Schrader lined a 2-run double down the left field line for a 3-1 lead.

The Hawkeyes quickly tied the score in their half of the inning, as a leadoff triple and RBI single made it 3-2. The Hawks eventually tied it on another RBI single later in the inning.

In the fourth, the Hawks took a 5-3 lead on a 2-run single from Nick Roscetti. Iowa added three runs in the fifth with a double, single and groundout to take an 8-3 lead.

Iowa added two more on a two-out single in the sixth, but a throw from Visintine to Thompson at third base erased a runner and end the frame.

Nathan Pollock entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and he took the first pitch to centerfield for a triple. He scored on Cord Church's bunt single making it 10-4.

Tschida matched a season-high (fifth time this year) with three hits. Visintine added two hits as did Currier. Western held a 13-11 edge in hits. Pollock moved into a six-way tie for the team lead with two triples this year, giving the Leathernecks 15 overall.

Making his first start of the year, Digrugilliers allowed one run on two hits in two innings. Nick Milligan (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Dave Dobrinich did not allow a run in 1.1 innings of relief and Colan Borchers followed by working a scoreless eighth inning. Four of the six Leatherneck pitchers combined for 10 walks allowed.

"That's part of using your whole pitching staff though, you're trying to get one time through the order with those guys. A lot of those guys had not thrown. We only threw five guys last weekend, so in order for us to make sure guys are ready for the weekend in case we need them they needed to throw today," said Brownlee.

Luke Vandermaten (2-0) earned the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. Robert Neustrom led Iowa (21-21) with three hits.

Western returns to Summit League action this weekend, traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a three-game series against Oral Roberts. First pitch on Friday night in the opener is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
