Baseball Drops Game Two Versus Omaha

Cord Church finishes with two hits and two RBI

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, but Omaha would score nine unanswered runs in the 9-2 decision Saturday afternoon (May 14) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The loss drops WIU to 11-15 in the Summit League (14-31 overall) while the Mavericks improve to 15-11 (25-24).

Western jumped out the 2-0 lead in the first. Chris Tschida singled with one out then two batters later Conner Currier extended his hitting streak to a personal-best 14 games. Cord Church lifted a flyball to right centerfield that dropped in for a 2-run double.

Starter Matthew Sturchio (0-2) cruised through the first two innings, needing just 14 pitches to record the six outs. He committed a throwing error on a comebacker to start the third, and eventually Clayton Taylor lined a two-out single to make it 2-1. Omaha used more two out hitting in the fourth inning to take the lead for good.

After a pair of singles to start the inning, Sturchio got a strikeout and groundout for two outs. The Mavs used three consecutive RBI singles to take a 4-2 lead.

The Mavs got a RBI single in the seventh, then broke the game open with four runs in the eighth inning. With two down, Omaha used an intentional walk followed by four straight RBI singles to put the game away.

Deion Thompson reached on a leadoff double to start the fourth, but Sam Murphy got out of that jam and from the sixth inning on David Flattery pitched four hitless innings of relief, retiring the final 11 Leathernecks in order.

Church had two of Western's seven hits in the game. Sturchio allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in a season-high six innings pitched. He did not allow a walk and struck out two.

Colan Borchers pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not give up a run.

Ryan Cate had four hits for Omaha while Adam Caniglia added three. Murphy (4-4) struck out six in five innings while Flattery earned his second save of the year.
