Leathernecks Lose Finale to Mavs

Conner Currier extends his hitting streak to 15 games

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois honored its six baseball seniors in a pre-game ceremony, but Omaha spoiled Senior Day as the Leathernecks lost the series finale 14-0 on Sunday.

Western remained in fourth place in the Summit League standings with three conference games remaining. The Leathernecks (11-16 Summit League) are tied with Fort Wayne, one game behind third place South Dakota State and one ahead of sixth place North Dakota State. The Leathernecks travel to Fort Wayne, and can secure a berth in the postseason tournament by taking 2-of-3 at Fort Wayne while SDSU travels to NDSU next week.

Starter Joe Mortillaro made his first start in a month and worked a 1-2-3 first inning. He allowed an unearned run in the second. In the third Omaha scored four runs off five hits.

Western got three singles in the game, but two of them came with two outs and Western could not advance a runner into scoring position off those hits. Adam McGinnis singled in the first and Deion Thompson singled in the second but both could not advance a base.

Omaha starter Corey Binger retired 14 in a row before Conner Currier extended his hitting streak to a personal-best and team season-high 15 games with a single up the middle in the seventh. He was erased on an inning-ending double play. Western had two other line drives in the game deflect off an Omaha player before getting thrown out at first. Roman Visintine was robbed of a base hit in the third when shortstop Riley Herold made a running over the shoulder catch in left centerfield.

Already leading 9-0 the Mavs batted around in the eighth scoring five times. Mark Garton was hit by a pitch to start the eighth and he stole second base. Nathan Pollock hit a line drive, but third baseman Clayton Taylor made a leaping catch and turned a double play to end the game.

Mortillaro (2-5) allowed five runs (four earned) off eight hits in 2.1 innings. Ricky Digrugilliers, Jordan Pannell and Sam Cottingham-Beard all pitched in relief.

In the pregame ceremony, Western honored its six seniors: Garton, Mortillaro, Pannell, Pollock, Erik Maki and Nick Milligan.

Binger (7-3) went the distance scattering the three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out five. Sam Palensky and Cole Gruber finished with three hits each.

Western closes out its home schedule on Tuesday afternoon (May 17), playing host to Iowa at 1 p.m.
