Western Drops Home Finale

Six different Leathernecks recorded a hit. Jimmy Perkins pitched a season-high five innings.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois dropped its home finale on Tuesday afternoon (May 17), falling to Iowa 10-2 at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
 
The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second. Starter Jimmy Perkins retired the first four batters he faced, but with runners on the corners and one out a ground ball brought home a run. In Western's second, Cord Church reached base on a wild pitch then Mark Garton walked. Deion Thompson hit a line drive that was caught on a leaping snare by the second baseman for the final out.
 
Iowa added another run in the third, then Western tied the score in its half of the inning.
 
Nathan Pollock drew a leadoff walk then took second on a balk. He scored on a Chris Tschida RBI single. He took second on the throw home then scored on Adam McGinnis' RBI double making it 2-2.
 
In the fifth, Iowa took the lead for good on a RBI single. Pollock led off the fifth with a walk then took second on Roman Visintine's single. The Hawkeyes got a double play and groundout to keep Western off the scoreboard.
 
Aden Campbell singled to start the sixth inning, and advanced to second on Church's sacrifice bunt. A groundout and flyball ended Western's threat.
 
Iowa added a run in the seventh making it 4-2. Western threatened again in its half. Pollock walked for the third time in the game with one out. Visintine's sacrifice bunt went through the legs of Iowa's pitcher to put the tying runs on base. Pollock was caught stealing on a double steal then the Hawks got a grounder to end the threat.
 
With two outs in the eighth and down 4-2, Western had errors on consecutive plays. Iowa ended up scoring six runs with two outs and pull away for the final margin.
 
Six different Leathernecks recorded a hit. Perkins (0-2) pitched a season-high five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out two.
 
Shane Ritter (2-0) earned the win in relief, throwing three scoreless innings. Five different Hawkeyes had a multi-hit game.
 
Western closes out the regular season with a Summit League series at Fort Wayne. The three game series begins Thursday afternoon (May 19), first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. central. Western must win two of the three games to qualify for next week's postseason tournament.
