WIU Women's Golf Finished Play in 2016 FGCU Invitational Sunday

ESTERO, Fla. - Western Illinois women's golf concluded action in the 2016 FGCU Eagle Invitational Sunday afternoon (Feb. 14). The Fighting Leathernecks finished in 14th place after finishing with a three-round score of 974 (333-317-324).

"As an overall team, we had a pretty good second day. We fought the wind a little during day one and day three, which made things more difficult," said head coach Lia Beihl Lukkarinen. "I was pleased with Allie (Leingang) and Anna (Cullinan) staying sharp and not letting their rounds get away from them. We played the par threes well, and we'll work on our mental game and approach shots once the snow melts. Overall we stayed upbeat and are grateful we got out to compete and practice in February."

Allie Leingang tied for 30th place overall to lead Western. The sophomore, who led the team in stroke average during the fall season with a 77.75 average, finished th invite with a 233 (81-73-79).

Junior Anna Cullinan, who ranked third on the team with an 80.00 stroke average during the fall, finished with a 241 (82-79-80) and tied for 56th place.

Seniors Julie Whalen and Allison Farrell finished tied for 75th and 78th, respectively. Whalen finished with a 249 (85-80-84) and Farrell carded a 252 (85-85-82).

Freshman Katie McTaggart, who had only competed in one event during the fall, rounded out the team's scores with a 264 (87-94-83), which placed her in 83rd.

The Leathernecks continue their spring slate in a month when they travel to Charleston, S.C. for The Citadel's home event on March 14-15.
