COACH WRIGHT POSTGAME INTERVIEW

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois was able to tie the game up early in the second half, but North Dakota State quickly pulled away and defeated WIU, 65-52, in Summit League action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 23).

"I give North Dakota State credit, they were able to get down the lane and finish, and when they missed, especially in the first half particularly, they were able to get eight or 12 second chance points. I thought we got good looks on offense, we just didn't finish," said head coach Billy Wright.

NDSU jumped out to an early 9-point lead, 15-6, but WIU was able to rattle off nine straight points and tie things up at 15, forcing a Bison timeout. North Dakota State answered with eight straight points and went into halftime with a 29-26.

The Leathernecks quickly knotted the game at 31-31 two minutes into the second, but the Bison answered again, built their lead up to double digits, and improved to 4-3 in league play and 14-7 overall with the win. Western fell to 7-11 overall and 0-7 in league action.

"I thought in the second half we did a better job of taking care of the ball. That has to be something that is consistent moving forward… taking care of the ball and not giving up points off turnovers or second chance points. Those are the things we feel like we can control and really be better at those things," continued Wright.

Seniors Tate Stensgaard and J.C. Fuller led Western with 10 points each, while juniors Garret Covington and Jabari Sandifer each tallied nine points. Covington also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and Stensgaard finished with seven rebounds.

Stensgaard, Fuller and Sandifer each finished with a team-best two assists.

Both teams struggled from the field (38.9 percent – 34.7) or long range (30.8 percent – 25.0) with NDSU edging WIU in both categories.

Kory Brown had 15 points and Paul Miller finished with 14 for the Bison. Dexter Werner had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

"We have to look at our areas of deficiency and attack them. That's all we can do, is get back to work and be more consistent and efficient at both ends of the floor," concluded Wright.

The Leathernecks hit the road for a pair of league games next weekend, playing at IUPUI on Friday (Jan. 29) and at Fort Wayne on Sunday (Jan. 31).
