Men’s Basketball Falls to IUPUI in Hard-Fought Summit League Road Contest

Garret Covington led four Leathernecks in double figures with 23 points

COACH WRIGHT POSTGAME INTERVIEW

INDIANAPOLIS – Western Illinois' comeback effort fell short Friday afternoon (Jan. 29) in Indianapolis as the IUPUI Jaguars edged the Fighting Leathernecks, 69-67, inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

The Leathernecks missed a desperation, half-court shot by senior forward Tate Stensgaard as time expired, falling to 7-12 overall and 0-8 in Summit League play after the loss. IUPUI, who is now tied for first in the league standings with a 6-2 Summit League mark, improves to 9-13 overall.

IUPUI used most of the first half to build a 13-point advantage up until the 1:36 mark of the opening 20 minutes. The Leathernecks responded in a big way, though, as they grabbed the lead back by closing out the first half and opening the second on a 14-0 run. WIU found itself up 37-36 just a minute and 30 seconds in to the second period.

After several minutes of back-and-forth basketball the two teams found themselves tied up 59-59 with just over five minutes left in regulation.

The Jaguars then scored five unanswered points over the next two minutes of action to build their lead up to 64-59. WIU was able to cut IUPUI's advantage to one point three different times during the final two minutes, but the Jaguars were able to hold off the Leathernecks for the win.

Garret Covington, a junior guard from Edwardsville, Ill., led four Leathernecks in double figures with 23 points. He connected on 8-of-16 attempts from the field and 4-of-6 tries from long range. The four 3-pointers moved him into sole possession of third place all-time at Western, as he now owns 184 career triples. His 23 points also bumped him up from 19th to 17th on WIU's all-time career-points list.

Jalen Chapman and Tate Stensgaard continued their impressive senior seasons. Chapman tallied 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and made all three of his free throw attempts. Stensgaard had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and made 2-of-3 from the charity stripe.

The two senior big men combined for 49 total minutes played, zero turnovers, made 9-of-12 field goal attempts, and 5-of-6 free throw attempts. Stensgaard also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and recorded one block, while Chapman grabbed three rebounds and recorded an assist and a steal.

Senior guard J.C. Fuller contributed 10 points, and finished with six rebounds and two steals.

The Leathernecks finished with eight more rebounds than IUPUI (33-25), but had only six assists to their 18 turnovers. IUPUI had nine assists and 14 turnovers.

The Jaguars edged WIU in shooting from the field (51.9 percent – 46.9), both teams shot 50 percent from long range, and Western made 15-of-18 (83.3) attempts from the free throw line compared to IUPUI who only made 11-of-20 (55.0).

Matt O'Leary led the Jaguars by finishing with 20 points of 9-of-9 shooting from the floor. He also grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Darell Combs added 18 points and four assists for IUPUI.
