IPFW Uses Second Half Surge to Propel Past WIU

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne Mastodons used a strong second half to propel past Western Illinois Sunday afternoon (Jan. 31) in Summit League action, 88-67.
 
The Fighting Leathernecks dropped to 0-9 in league play and 7-13 overall after the loss, while IPFW, who remains tied for first in the league, improves to 7-2 in the league and 18-6 overall.
 
Fort Wayne used the first 13 minutes of the game to build a 13-point advantage. The Leathernecks, though, were able to cut their deficit to four points at the break, 38-34, thanks to outscoring the Mastodons 15-6 during the final 6:15 of the first half.
 
IPFW came out of the locker room on fire in the second half, shooting 63.3 percent (19-30) from the field and 70.0 percent (7-10) from long range during the final 20 minutes. The hot shooting led to the Mastodons tallying 50 points in the second half, on their way to a 21-point victory.
 
Junior Garret Covington led the team in scoring for the 11th time this season and 42nd time during his career, finishing with 17 points. He shot 7-of-17 from the field and 3-of-9 from outside the arc. He also grabbed four rebounds and a steal.
 
With his 17 points the Edwardsville, Ill. native jumped up from #17 to #16 on WIU's all-time scoring list, now owning 1,197 career points. He needs only 16 to crack the 'Top 15'.
 
The only other Leatherneck to score in double figures was junior Jabari Sandifer who finished with 11. Sandifer also dished out a team-high six of the team's nine assists, and pulled down four rebounds while only committing one turnover.
 
Seniors Tate Stensgaard and J.C. Fuller finished with nine and eight points, respectively. Stensgaard also collected a team-best seven rebounds.
 
The Mastodons had four players finish with 16-plus points. Max Landis notched 19, Joe Reed had 17, and both Michael Calder and DeAngelo Stewart tallied 16.
 
IPFW finished with 20 assists and seven turnovers compared to WIU's nine assists and 10 turnovers. The Mastodons bettered Western in rebounds (36-33) and steals (5-2), while also shooting better from the field, the free throw line and the 3-point line.
 
Western Illinois returns home to play another team that is tied for first place in The Summit League standings this Wednesday (Feb. 3) in the Omaha Mavericks. The two teams are slated to tipoff at 7 p.m. live on ESPN3.
