NORMAL, Ill. -
The Fighting Leatherneck women's golf team finished action in the 2015 Redbird Invitational Monday (September 7) as the event concluded with the final 18 holes. Western Illinois finished in 16th place with a three-round score of 967 (329-311-327).

"It was exciting to get the season started, despite the extreme heat we played in. I was pleased with a few of our individual rounds, especially Allie (Leingang) having the lowest round of the tournament which she recorded in the second round, a -2 (70)," said head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Our best round was on the most challenging afternoon, the second round of the 36-hole day. We finished top 10 in birdies and Par 5 stats, so overall we had some really solid play but struggled to put four solid scores together. We will work on eliminating trouble holes and putting better on fast greens as we begin preparation for our next 36-hole, 18-hole event at Ball State."

Sophomore Alex Krehbiel, who finished tied for 69th with a final score of 244, led WIU in round three with a 78. Krehbiel improved her score in every round, carding an 85 in round one and an 80 in the second round.

Leading the team overall was Allie Leingang who finished tied for 37th with a 236. The sophomore opened the invite with an 85 before carding the tournament's lowest round of the weekend; a 70 (-2) in round two. Leingang concluded the event with an 81 in the final round.

Senior Allison Farrell and junior Anna Cullinan finished tied for 75th and tied for 79th, respectively. Farrell scored a 246 (84-79-83) and Cullinan a 247 (79-82-86).

Rounding out Western's top five was Jessica Schultz who finished in 82nd with a 251 (81-85-85).

Maria Peters competed as an individual and finished in 90th with a 261 (88-87-86).

The Leathernecks are off next week before resuming competition with the Ball State's Cardinal Classic Sept. 21-22.
