Adams, Sawhney Aim For Doubles Crown After Day One of Art Peterson

All four Leathernecks still remain in the singles flights.

MACOMB, Ill. - Following Day One of the Art Peterson Invitational, the No. 2 doubles team of Surya Sawhney and Collin Adams find themselves in the semi-finals after a 7-6 (11-9) victory in the opening round on Friday (Sept. 5). In singles action, all four Leathernecks remain in the consolation bracket.

"It is great to be able to host another invitational at Western Illinois for our men's tennis program," said head coach Mashiska Washington. "This is a great way to start the fall season with the support of our community.  Our entire team was able to participate today and each player was a part of either a singles or doubles victory.  Today's event would not have been possible without the assistance of our entire athletic department and their continual support."

Sawhney and Adams will face the No. 2 team from South Dakota State after the Jackrabbit duo received a first round bye. In No. 1 doubles, Christoph Haertel and Chris Bunch fell 6-3 and will face Truman State's No. 1 doubles team of Jake Ohlhausen and Griffin Smith in the consolation bracket.

Haertel and Bunch both rebounded following first round losses in No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively, winning their second round matches. Adams won his opening round match art No. 3 singles, but fell to SDSU's Jonny Higham and will play for third place against Slobodam Bavrlic of Lindenwood.

Sawhney plays for the consolation bracket title on Saturday (Sept. 6).

Action continues at the 10th Annual Art Peterson Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 6) beginning at 9 a.m. at the WIU Tennis Facility across from Western Hall.
