Leatherneck Women's Golf Concludes Season with Fifth-Place Finish

KELLER, Texas - The Western Illinois women's golf team wrapped up competition in the 2014 Summit League Championships Wednesday afternoon with a score of 975 and a fifth-place finish. The Fighting Leathernecks carded a 325 in each of the three rounds.

"Our team had a really up and down season this year, but it was nice to conclude our 2013-14 campaign with a fifth-place finish in the conference championships," said head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "I was hoping that we would be able to battle into the top half of the final standings, potentially finish third or fourth... which was certainly in reach, but we let a couple of holes hurt our final score."

Lone senior Kristi Tschudin led WIU with a 235 and finished tied for eighth-place. Tschudin rattled off scores 79, 76, and 80 in the three rounds, pared a total of 32 holes in the event, and birded five.

"I know Kristi (Tschudin) really wanted to finish in the 'Top 5', but even though she is probably disappointed in her finish, overall I think she had a great tournament. She's had a great career here at Western, we are really proud of her, and we were very fortunate to have had her be a part of our program," concluded Lukkarinen.

Tying for 22nd-place was Jessica Schultz who finished with a score of 249. The freshman opened the event with a 77 before posting a 90 in round two and 82 in the third round.

Jessica Knepp and Ashley Jeffers each finished tied for 25th-place with scores of 251. Knepp hit an 85 in round one before tallying scores of 81 and 85 in rounds two and three, while Jeffers improved her score by multiple strokes each round, carding scores of 88, 85, and 78.

Rounding out the Leathernecks' 'Top 5' is Allison Farrell who finished the tournament with a 254 (84-83-87).

Denver won The Summit League team title with a 887 (295-300-292), and the Pioneers' Tonje Daffinrun won the individual crown with a 219 (74-74-71).
