Baseball Falls to NDSU in Series Finale

FARGO, N.D. - A five run third inning proved to be enough for NDSU as the Bison defeated the Leathernecks 6-3 in the weekend finale Sunday (April 20). Western falls to 11-22 overall this season and 6-6 in league play, while the Bison improve to 11-17 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

At the plate Jameson Henning and Chris Tschida each recorded two hits for the Purple & Gold in the game. Henning finished with two RBIs, while Tschida notched two doubles.

On the mound Tom Constand (1-6) got the loss after starting the game and throwing the first 2.2 innings. Robbie Nunn, Nick Bakeris and Nick Milligan combined to throw the final 5.1 innings for WIU with no runs allowed.

After a scoreless first the Bison scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second. John Skrbec drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Michael Leach single to give the Bison the 1-0 lead.

Western answered with its first run in the top of the third to even the score at 1-1. After Travis Stafford reached on a fielder's choice, Zack Burling hit his third double of the season to put runners on second and third. Henning then hit an RBI single up the middle to tie the game.

In the bottom of the third the Bison got to Constand, recording five hits and scoring five runs to take a 6-1 lead, and force Constand out of the game.

The next four innings would be scoreless for both teams before the Leathernecks ended the scoring drought in the eighth with two runs. JJ Reimer singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Henning double. Henning scored on a Neil DeCook single to make it 6-3.

Western held NDSU scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and put one runner on in the ninth, but the Bison were able to keep WIU off the board to earn their third league victory of the season.

Reed Pfannenstein (1-0) picked up the win for NDSU after throwing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and one run allowed.

The Leathernecks finished the game with five extra base hits. Brent Turner hit his team-best third triple of the season for Western in the third inning.

Western now turns its attention to a four-game weekend set against Fort Wayne beginning Friday (April 25). All four games take place at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in Macomb.
