IOWA CITY, Iowa - Western Illinois swimming and diving fell in its final dual meet of the regular season to Big Ten Conference member Iowa 128-80 (men) and 137-60 (women) on Friday (Feb. 8).

The Leathernecks turned in one first place finish and earned 14 runner-up finishes.

"We had a tough time getting up and racing fast for our meet against Iowa," head coach Greg Naumann said. "The meet moved very fast since we were swimming shorter events, and didn't have our longest race either. We did have some strong swims by people here and there, but many were tired and not feeling fresh."

Leading the way for the men and earning the lone first place finish was Doug Ogilvie in three-meter diving (303.24). He also took second in one-meter diving (310.65).

Also recording runner-up finishes for the men were Tyler Neaveill in the 50 fly (23.67), Austin Payne in the 100 free (50.12), Jonathan Bond in the 50 back (25.33), Matt Abercrombie in the 500 free (4:48.31), JD Furr in the 50 breast (28.21) and Viktor Rusenas in three-meter diving (225.75).

The women recorded a total of seven second place finishes altogether. Abby Hansen paced the women earning two runner-up spots, taking second in the 50 fly (28.84) and the 50 back (30.31).

Others contributing second place finishes for the women included Julia Rassmussen in one-meter diving (222.90), Mary Betsworth in the 100 free (57.58), Megan Popp in the 500 free (5:29.52) and Paige Wolfe in the 50 breast (34.53).

The men's and women's 200 free relay team also took second in their respective races.

The Fighting Leathernecks return to action and take on all conference members in the Summit League Championships Feb. 20-23. The meet is hosted by Oakland in Rochester, Mich.

"Our goal is to always feel good at conference so that they swim even faster at that time, and we are on schedule to do so," added Naumann. "It's hard for them to be able to accept it, and put faith in the training, but it works out in the end for those who have worked hard all season."
