CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Juniors Nichole Manning (pole vault) and Dana LaRue
(shot put) both picked up victories Friday when the Western Illinois track and field program competed at Northern Iowa's
Messersmith Invitational.
Manning cleared a season-best height
of 12-07.50 for her fifth pole vault victory in seven events this
season. Manning is Western Illinois' record holder (12-11.50) and
currently ranks third in The Summit League.
LaRue won her third
shot put event this season with a throw of 48-10.00. The performance is a
personal best and the fourth best throw in program history. LaRue
currently sits second in The Summit League rankings.
Meanwhile
senior Jessica Ortega placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of
42-02.75. Ortega also placed third in the women's hammer throw with a
personal-best throw of 171-07. Her hammer throw performance is the fifth
best in The Summit League and sixth farthest in program history.
In
the track events, senior Nikki Klier placed third in the women's
400-meter dash with a time of 55.75. Klier just missed her season-best
performance at the Musco Twilight XII (55.73) which currently ranks
fourth in The Summit League.
In men's field events, sophomore
Zach Glasebrook finished second in the men's long jump (22-00.25) and
Michael Crabtree placed third in the men's high jump (6-04.75).
Freshman
Nathaniel Marshall placed sixth in the men's hammer throw (165-08) and
eighth in the discus throw (149-03). Meanwhile junior Paul Hames
finished fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 168-04.
Western
Illinois' busy weekend continues tomorrow (Saturday,
May 7) as the Fighting Leathernecks compete in Madison,
Wis. at the Wisconsin Twilight Invitational. It is the Fighting
Leathernecks final competition before The Summit League Outdoor
Championships, which will be hosted by South Dakota State from May 12-14 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
