SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Senior Nikki Klier and junior Jason Crisman collected
top three finishes and Western Illinois concluded The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field
Championships Saturday (May 14).
As a team, Western's women finished fifth
out of eight teams with 55 points while the men finished sixth out of seven
teams with 53.5 total points. The Fighting Leathernecks collected five top-three
finishes on the weekend and junior Dana LaRue won the women's shot put title
Friday with a throw of 46-10.25.
Klier qualified for the finals of the women's 400-meter
dash Friday with a time of 58.67 and placed second Saturday with a
mark of 56.30. Southern Utah's Christina Day won the event with
a time of 55.83.
Junior Jason Crisman, who placed second in the men's shot put Friday,
recorded a discus throw of 162-10 to finish third overall.
Freshman Nathaniel Marshall placed eighth in the event with a throw of 148-03.
Junior Miranda Brockman set a season-best with a fourth place finish
in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Her time of 1:04.68 eclipses her mark of
1:04.69 at the Stan Lyons Invitational (April 30).
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, junior Jeffrey Liles placed fourth
with a mark of 54.70. Liles was also the first leg of the men's 4x400-meter
relay squad that finished fourth overall with a time of 3:22.91. Senior Aaron Russo, senior Garrett DeGross and junior Michael Hemming rounded out the
4x400-meter relay effort.
Junior Lizzy Jones placed fifth in the women's discus with a personal best throw of 147-06.
The performance ranks as the ninth farthest in program history and beats her
throw of 145-02 set at Iowa's Musco Twilight Invitational (April 23).
Senior Carianna Cottone, who earned an Exercise Science bachelor's degree Saturday, set a
personal best with a fifth place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run.
Cottone's mark of 17:50.29 easily beats her time of 18:42.32 set in 2008.
Cottone also ran in the women's 1,500-meter run and placed seventh
overall with a time of 4:44.41.
Sophomore Chelsea Lynes finished fifth in the event with a mark of 4:40.50.
Senior Aaron Russo also set a personal best in the men's 800-meter run. Russo placed sixth
overall with a mark of 1:55.05, which ranks as the best Western Illinois
performance this season. Russo eclipsed his previous personal best of 1:55.35
set at the 2011 Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational.
In the men's 5,000-meter run, senior Tyler Buckles set a season best in a eighth place finish (15:19.97). Buckles' mark of 15:04.85 at last year's Summit League Championships ranks as the ninth fastest in program history.
Elsewhere, sophomore Davin Dollison set a personal best in the men's triple jump. His leap of 47-01.00 was good for eighth place and beats his mark of 46-02.50 at Iowa's Musco Twilight Invitational (April 23).
Several Fighting
Leathernecks will compete in the NCAA West Regional from May 26-28 at the
University of Oregon. They will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor
Championships, which take place in Des Moines, Iowa from June 8-11.
