Zach Sterling Shuts Down Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Leathernecks and Golden Grizzlies played just one game on Saturday instead of the scheduled doubleheader. An overnight storm and poor field conditions forced the double-dip to be played on Sunday. The Leathernecks used 16 hits including three home runs to power its way to a victory.

Zach Sterling (4-2) dazzled on Saturday and held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless over his 8.0 innings work while setting down nine Oakland hitters via the strikeout. Sterling only allowed four hits on the afternoon.

Tom Lilja put the Purple Army on the board with a fourth inning solo home run. It was Lilja's ninth big fly of the season.

Austin Cowen started the seventh inning in style with his first home run of season. Dan Dispensa singled with two outs before Matt Igara drew a walk. John Koszluinski was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lilja delivered with a two RBI single to extend the Leatherneck lead to 4-0. Bryan Jordan followed with another two RBI single to left field.

Danny Marcuzzo hit his fourth home run of the season in the top of the ninth to put the seventh run on the board

Chris Fuchs pitched the final inning to secure the victory for Western Illinois. The senior induced a game-ending double play of the 4-6-3 variety.

Lilja was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Marcuzzo collected three hits and an RBI while Jordan was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Cowen also drove in a run with a home run and turned in a 2-for-4 performance. Anthony Kaskadden collected four hits on the season, just the second Leatherneck to that this season. The other was Dispensa who collected four hits at Missouri State on March 20.

A doubleheader will be played tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m. (ET).
