Leathernecks wrap up regular-season in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Western Illinois Men's Tennis team wrapped up its regular season with matches against Oral Roberts and UMKC over the weekend.

The Fighting Leathernecks (8-14, 4-2) clinched the No. 2 seed in The Summit League Tournament despite dropping both of their weekend matches.

Western Illinois dropped its first match of the weekend to Oral Roberts by a 4-3 score on Saturday. The Leathernecks won three of the six singles matches before Oral Roberts clinched the match with victories in two of three hard-fought doubles matches.

"If this were an election, Oral Roberts would have gotten 50.1 percent of the vote, and we would have gotten 49.9 percent," said head coach Chris Kane. "The match was an close as could possibly be. About three times this afternoon, I thought we had the match, and about three times I thought Oral Roberts had it."

The Leathernecks held an early 3-0 advantage after Patrick Hammers, Francisco Ortiz and Jim Capalbo picked up wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Oral Roberts came back to tie the match at 3-3 with wins at the other singles flights. Western Illinois went up in doubles play as Alejandro Buceta and Ben Yue won their match at No. 3 doubles (8-2) before the Golden Eagles won the final two doubles matches to seal the victory.

"I am extremely proud of the effort and determination shown by our players," said Kane. "They play hard every time out and they make me proud to be their coach."

The Leathernecks lost their second match of the weekend to UMKC on Sunday. The Kangaroos clinched The Summit League Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in the league tournament with a 7-0 victory over Western.

Western Illinois will take the rest of the week to prepare for a first-round match against No. 3 seed IUPUI at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 22. The winner will take on either UMKC or Oral Roberts at 10 a.m. on Saturday for the tournament title in Fort Wayne, Ind.
