MURRAY, Ky. - The Western Illinois women's golf team finished play in the NewWave Communications Classic on Tuesday. The tournament was shortened to 18-holes due to heavy rains. The Leathernecks were the runner-ups for the tournament with a team score of 323 and Lindsay Wandrey finished in second.
Western Illinois have finished in the top-five of every tournament this year dating back to the fall season.
Murray State won the Invitational with a team score of 317. Other teams competing in the tournament were Austin Peay (326), Belmont (336), Valparaiso (340) and Tennessee State (376).
Wandrey shot a 78 and missed first-place by two strokes. Murray State's Morgan Cross won the event with a 76. Claire Gursh tied for third after she carded an 80. Emily Brink also finished inside the top-10 with a 81 which was good enough for a tie for ninth place. Tara Peterman registered an 84 on the day and Alexa Arent finished with an 89. Kristi Tschudin played as an individual and shot a 83 and tied for 18th.
"We did a pretty good job today on a very wet course, said Lia Biehl Lukkarinen."
"I am very proud of Lindsay and Claire on their performances today. We have a few weeks before spring break and now we know what we need to work on."
"It is a good season opener for us and when we all get on the same page at the same time we will be in a good position."
Western Illinois will get a taste of the Summit League course as they travel to Primm, Nev. and participate in the Jackrabbit invitational hosted by South Dakota State on March 14-15.
