ORLANDO, Fla. - The Western Illinois men's tennis team snapped a seven-match losing streak when it picked up a 4-3 win over Quinnipiac in Orlando on Monday, March 14.
"It was a great win for us today," said head coach Chris Kane. "We had lost some tough matches lately, not for lack of effort or
enthusiasm. Rather, we had just played some particularly talented teams. We played
with a real hard-nosed edge today, fought through adversity and pulled it out."
The Fighting Leathernecks (3-7) won for the first time since a 7-0 win over Chicago State on Jan. 23 by picking up two key wins in doubles play.
Western Illinois dropped the first three singles matches before rallying to win the final three and two of three doubles matches. Jeff Cote dropped his match at No. 1 singles in three sets (5-7, 6-4, 12-10) while Patrick Hammers was defeated at the No. 2 spot (6-0, 7-6 (4)).
Alejandro Buceta dropped his match at No. 3 singles (6-4, 4-6, 11-9) before Mandela Shepard picked up Western's first win at the No. 4 position (6-2, 6-4).
Francisco Ortiz won in straight sets at No. 5 singles (7-5, 7-5) and Jim Capalbo did the same in the No. 6 spot (6-1, 7-5).
In doubles play, the team of Shepard/Ortiz fell in the No. 1 spot (8-2) while the teams of Cote/Buceta and Hammers/Ben Yue won at the No. 2 and 3 spots respectively.
The Leathernecks return to action tomorrow at 9 a.m. against Youngstown State before taking on Boston University at 6:30 p.m. to capp off the trip to Florida.
