IOWA INVITATIONAL RESULTS
IOWA CITY, Iowa
- Sophomore Chelsea Lynes (800-Meter Run) and junior Nichole Manning (Pole
Vault) won their respective events and several Fighting Leathernecks set
personal bests when the Western Illinois track and field program competed at
the Iowa Invitational Friday (Feb. 18) night.
Held inside the
UI Recreation Center on the campus of the University of Iowa, the Iowa
Invitational is Western Illinois' final meet before the 2011 Summit League
Indoor Championships hosted by North Dakota State from Feb. 27-28. Five schools
participated in the Iowa Invitational, including host Iowa, Coe College, St. Ambrose, Drake
and Western Illinois.
"Today was another step forward for us," said Western
Illinois head coach David Beauchem. "The challenge now will be staying healthy
as we get through the training for The Summit League Indoor Championships."
Lynes won the
Women's 800-Meter Run by almost two seconds with a personal best time of
2:17.18. The Woodstock, Ontario native now owns Western's fastest 800-Meter Run time this
season, besting junior Amy Byers mark of 2:17.65 set at the Iowa State Holiday Preview
(Dec. 10, 2010). Lynes also placed second in the Women's 600-Meter Run (1:38.37).
Manning, who holds
the Western Illinois pole vault record (12-08.25), easily won the Women's Pole
Vault with the third best mark in school history, 11-11.75. Her performance is Western's highest this season
and ranks as The Summit League's third best.
Meanwhile, junior Miranda Brockman
placed second in the Women's 200-Meter Dash with a personal-best mark of 27.35 and sophomore
Davin Dollison finished second in the Men's portion with a personal-best time
of 22.92. In the Women's One-Mile Run, senior Carianna Cottone placed sixth and
set a personal-best with a time of 5:09.90.
Elsewhere, sophomore Chase Marlow
placed second in the Men's 3000-Meter Run (personal-best 8:52.39) and sophomore
Zach Glasebrook finished second in the Men's Long Jump with a personal-best
leap of 21-09.00. Both performances are Western Illinois bests this season.
In Weight Throw action, senior Jessica
Ortega placed third (51-05.50) in the Women's event and junior Paul Hames set a
personal-best in a fourth-place finish (55-10.25) in the Men's portion. Junior
Jason Crisman, The Summit League's current Shot Put leader, finished fourth in
the Men's Shot Put with a mark of 53-01.75.
In the Men's 600-Meter Run, junior
Michael Hemming ran the ninth fastest time in program history (1:24.18)
in a fifth place finish. Meanwhile,
senior Garrett DeGross placed third in the Men's 400-Meter Dash (53.74) after
setting a personal-best of 51.81
last weekend at the Iowa State Classic.
Western Illinois
is back in action next weekend (Feb. 27-28) when the Fighting Leathernecks
travel to Fargo, N.D. for the 2011 Summit League Indoor Championships presented
by American Airlines. The two-day event, hosted by North Dakota State, begins
on Sunday (Feb. 27) inside Bison Sports Arena.
The field events
on Sunday are set to begin at 3 p.m. with the Women's Weight Throw while the
events on the track also start at 3 p.m. with the preliminaries of the
Women's 60-Meter Hurdles. The Championships continue on Monday (Feb. 28) at 12 p.m. with
the Women's Shot Put.
