INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Western Illinois volleyball team closed out the
2010 season with a 3-0 (9-25, 21-25, 28-30) loss to conference foe IUPUI Saturday
night at The Jungle.
IUPUI (8-22, 7-11 Summit League)
tallied 53 kills and hit .333 against the Fighting Leathernecks, who finished the season
with an 8-22 overall
record and a 3-15 mark in Summit League action. Western collected
39 kills against IUPUI, which is the third most in a three-set match this season.
"Although we did not
pick up a victory tonight, I thought we battled hard in a tough environment,"
Western Illinois head coach Kym McKay said. "Katie Hosteng and Megan
Toczek were both very active and efficient offensively, while Jessie Lantz
provided us a spark on defense late in the match. Everybody is excited about getting back in the gym to prepare for
the 2011 season."
Sophomore
Katie Hosteng had 14 kills and a .444 attack percentage to lead the Leatherneck
offensive attack for the fourth time this season. It was also Hosteng's sixth double-digit
outing of the season and her first since Oct. 29. Junior Brooke Stittleburg
posted 10 kills on 23 attempts to finish the season with 13 double-digit
efforts. Stittleburg, who owned 166 career kills entering the season, ranked
third on the squad with 243 kills.
Megan
Toczek added six kills on 16 attempts for a .312 attack percentage. Toczek also
added four of Western's 12 block assists and the Leathernecks finished the
night with seven total blocks. Freshman setter Heather Smith had 23 assists for
her first 20-plus outing since Oct. 23. Smith finished the season with
team-high 635 assists and also led the squad with 25 service aces.
Senior
Ellen Miller, playing in her final match as a Leatherneck, collected a
team-high 12 digs for her 14th consecutive double-digit performance. She had 23
double-digit outings this season and led the squad with 373 digs. Miller
finished her career with 1,133 digs, which is seventh all-time in program
history. Miller also ranks seventh all-time with 1,744 career assists.
Hosteng
had three kills in the first ten points of the match, but IUPUI went on an 11-0
run to go up 18-3. IUPUI had 16 kills and posted a .571 attack percentage in a 25-9
first set victory. Hosteng finished the set with four kills and Toczek added
two kills on five attempts.
Down
11-8 in the second set, the Leathernecks went on a 4-0 run to go up 12-11. Two
Hosteng kills and a Meghan Ross/Hosteng combination block highlighted the run. An
IUPUI service ace gave Western the lead again at 13-12, but IUPUI captured
seven out of the next eight points to go up 19-14. The Jaguars never
relinquished the lead in a 25-21 second set victory. Western collected 15 kills
with a .324 attack percentage in the set, but IUPUI had 19 kills and hit .452
to go up 2-0. Hosteng posted five kills on eight attempts, while Stittleburg
and Toczek added three kills apiece.
Down 12-10 in
the third set, Western rallied off four straight points to take its first lead
of the set at 14-12. The Leathernecks held a 21-19 advantage following Hosteng's 12th
kill of the night, but IUPUI used a 4-0 run to go up 23-21. Two consecutive
Stittleburg kills tied up the set at 23-23, and the two teams battled to stalemates
all the way up to 28-28 following Cait Egan's third kill of the night. A Dana
Gardner kill gave IUPUI a 29-28 advantage, and a combination block by Gardner
and Bethany Fogler secured the match victory for the Jaguars.
Stittleburg
recorded seven kills on 12 attempts in the third set, which featured 12 ties
and eight lead changes. Western collected four of its seven total blocks in the
set, including Meghan Ross' second solo block of the season. Freshman Jessie Lantz was strong defensively as she recorded four digs in the third set and finished the match with seven.
