Westerwinds battle to a double overtime draw

MACOMB, Ill.- After a very wet, physical game, which saw 42 fouls called, the Western Illinois women's soccer team battled Northern Illinois to a 1-1 double overtime draw at Vince Grady Field.

The game was moved to one of the team's practice fields due to the heavy amounts of rain that John MacKenzie Alumni Field had accumulated over the past few days. Despite the move, the practice field at Vince Grady Field still proved to be challenging conditions for both teams.

"You have to be more simple and direct when playing in these conditions," said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "If you tried dribbling the ball today it would get stuck and stop under your feet. You had to make a lot more passes."

The Westerwinds (1-2-1) got on the board early in the third minute of the game when sophomore Caitlin Barrett (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) received a pass from junior Keeley Murray (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and rolled a shot just inside the left post. It was Barrett's first goal since the 2006 Mid-Continent Conference championship after redshirting in 2007.

The game would remain 1-0 with the Huskies (3-0-3) putting a lot of pressure on Western's defense, taking 11 shots in the second half. Northern tied the game up in the 73rd minute of the game with sophomore Becca Ford's third goal of the season. Ford dribbled through the Westerwinds' defense and unloaded a shot just outside the reach of sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay).

"The defense did a very good job at handling the pressure," Guinn stated. "But they did make a mistake by letting them score a goal from 15 yards out with 18 minutes left in the game. They weren't perfect by any means and we still have work to do on that end of the field."

Western had one last shot to win the game with time running off the clock. Barrett got a left-footed shot off that was smothered by Huskies' goalkeeper Audrey Holmer. As soon as Holmer got to her feet, the referee had blown the whistle to end the game.

Tyk made her first start this season and played all 110 minutes of the game. She made six saves in the game and only allowed the one goal.

"They were a good team," said Guinn. "They were unbeaten coming into the day and remained that way. They'll do well in their conference."

The Westerwinds will be busy next week as they play three games in six days. They hit the road for a pair of games at Northern Iowa (Sept. 16, 4:30 p.m.) and Illinois State (Sept. 19, 4 p.m.), before returning to John MacKenzie Alumni Field for a Sept. 21 match-up against Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m.
