INDIANAPOLIS – The Western Illinois men's tennis team went undefeated in its first two conference match-ups for the Spring 2007 season.

The Leathernecks (12-7, 2-0 Mid-Continent Conference) defeated UMKC 4-0 for their first victory in conference play. In singles play, Boström defeated UMKC's Richard Harrison, 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot. At the No. 2 slot, Junck defeated Pat Smith, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-1, while sophomore Neil Lesinski took a 6-2, 6-3 decision at the No. 3 position.

In doubles, senior duo Josh Wittenberg and Justin Junck took the No. 1 spot, 8-5, while fellow senior Drew Forsberg and junior partner Martin Boström won at the No. 3 position, 8-1.

"Today was a good day for us," head tennis coach Michael Hunt said. "UMKC is a very good team and we had to play at a high level to win. We'll need to play at an even higher level tomorrow to beat Valparaiso."

The Leathernecks went on to beat Centenary 4-0, to go undefeated in Friday's competition. Junck took the No. 1 singles match, 6-3, 6-1, while junior Andy Jones took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. Doubles No. 1 duo, Wittenberg and Junck took a 8-1 win, making them undefeated for the day.

The men finish their weekend competition, Saturday at 9 a.m., at Indianapolis against Valparaiso.
