Western Illinois University Athletics

Samir Almhiemid has led a busy senior campaign. He currently serves as the president of the Leathernecks’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is also as a member of the University’s swimming and diving program. 

This past month, Almhiemid assisted Western’s relay teams to three wins in the 200-yard medley and another in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard free. He also posted a pair of individual victories in the 100-yard backstroke. 

For his efforts, he was selected as the Hampton Inn Scholar-Athlete for the month of January. 



Why did you choose to attend Western Illinois University?
I chose Western Illinois University because of the team atmosphere on my recruiting trip. It was a place where the team acted more like a family.

What has been the most memorable moment of your Leatherneck career so far? 
The most memorable moment of my Leatherneck career was being a part of both the 200 and 400 medley relays that broke school records my freshman year.

Do you have a hobby, outside of your sport?
I'm a big baseball fan so anything to do with baseball I would consider a hobby outside of my sport.

Do you have any secret talents?
I have absolutely no secret talents.
