MACOMB, IL - The Western Illinois track and field teams turned in a strong showing at the Meet of Champions, highlighted by five event titles and numerous top-10 finishes against strong competition.
Freshman Kenneth Cooley had a strong performance with a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in the 100 meters (10.57) and 200 meters (21.40). On the women's side, freshman Rhianna Davis added a third-place finish in the 100 meters (12.25), while junior Jolena Site placed third in the 200 meters (24.95).
In the 400 meters, sophomore Zearra Milburn recorded a seventh-place finish in 1:02.01. Junior Janelle Marshall led the hurdles group with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.48), while graduate student Kevyere Mack placed ninth on the men's side in 59.96.
Graduate student Krissy Petrou added a ninth-place finish in the 800 meters (2:24.45).
Western saw a dominant showing in the 1500 meters, led by graduate student Maleigha Huston, who captured the event title in 4:45.87. Junior Emma-Kate Watt placed third in 4:48.12, junior Hannah Steinmeyer finished sixth in 4:57.80, and freshman Finley Hancock added an eighth-place finish in 5:00.99.
In the steeplechase, freshman Lily Patterson placed fifth in 12:01.86, while sophomore Eason Comer finished third on the men's side in 9:35.26, a personal-best performance for the sophomore.
In the field events, senior Rayvon Wright won the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 2.00m, while junior Karlee Zumstein placed 10th at 1.48m. Senior Toriano Tate captured the long jump title with a mark of 7.15m , with senior Cage Davison finishing third at 6.92m and senior Nakeita Kessling placing fifth on the women's side at 5.22mÂ
Kessling added another title in the triple jump with a mark of 11.65m, while junior Kelsey Hutchins placed third at 11.40m and Wright finished fourth at 13.80m. In the discus, junior Franka Weil-Restrepo recorded a personal best of 39.49m to place 10th.
The pole vault group added multiple top-10 finishes, led by junior Dana Surwillo's second-place mark of 3.75m. Senior Emma Ponx placed fourth at 3.60m, freshman Kelly Fern finished ninth at 3.30m, and junior Charlie Terry added a sixth-place finish on the men's side at 4.40m.
In relay action, the men's 4x100-meter relay team of Cage Davison, Toriano Tate, Kevyere Mack, and Kenneth Cooley placed third in 42.44. The women's 4x100-meter relay team of Rhianna Davis, Alyssa Adeoti, Nyla Norman, and Mya Hippolyte captured the event title in 47.69, while the 4x400-meter relay team of Adeoti, Site, Milburn, and Huston also finished first in 3:55.72.
Western Illinois will look to build on this momentum heading into the Drake Relays and the Kip Janvrin Open later this week.
