Women's Golf Finishes Rust Buster Match Play Tournament

MACOMB, Ill-  Western Illinois Women's Golf wrapped up their first meet of the Spring season on Tuesday in Clermont, Florida where they fell in all three rounds of the Rust Buster Match play tournament to Omaha, Akron, and Northern Iowa.


Round one had some notable performances as well as close finishes from the Leatherneck Women. Olivia Kerr had three birdies in the opening round, and birdied on two of her last three holes, but was unable to finish the round being down four with three holes to go. 


There were three of the WIU matches that came down to the final hole in round one. Mia Scrimgeour birdied two out of three holes on 18 and 2 to make it a close finish. On the final hole, Scrimgeour would bogey finishing with a first round score of 77. Gabriela Galindo Rubio and Sophia Thorne also played to the final hole. Galindo Rubio was tied heading into the last hole and would par the final hole shooting a 77 in the opening round, but her opponent birdied to take the match. Thorne was down one entering the final hole and would get a bogey finishing with an opening round score of 78. 


In round two, Abby Hunter would make par on twelve of the seventeen holes played. Hunter finished with one birdie for the round on hole 16. In the third round, Olivia McCrystal won her match against her opponent from Northern Iowa. McCrystal would shoot an 82 in the final round, winning by one hole with a birdie on a par three on the 17th hole. 


The Leathernecks will be back on the course next Wednesday, February 19, in Russellville, Arkansas for a scrimmage against Arkansas Tech.

Round three: Northern Iowa 5, WIU 1
