MACOMB, IL – During the weekend of May 3-5, WIU Athletics will welcome back baseball alumni from several generations, including the 1974 Western Illinois University Hall of Fame Baseball team as they celebrate some of their Golden Memories with fans and current players as part of the annual WIU Baseball Alumni Weekend. Fifty years ago, the 1974 team embarked on a season-long journey that engraved their name into the record books of Leatherneck Athletics history. Led by WIU Athletics Hall of Fame Head Coach Dick Pawlow, the team worked their way to an NCAA post-season bid and the best finish of any Leatherneck Baseball team ever.
The 1974 season opener was a grueling 10-day, 14-game southern trip, which served as a test for the team and concluded with a respectable 8-6 record. However, it was their showdown against the seventh ranked team in the nation, Tulane University, that showcased their battle toughness, clinching two out of three games against the formidable Green Wave. As the season unfolded, the Leathernecks' prowess became increasingly evident. Their home opener saw them decimate Quincy College 25-3, followed by dominant victories over Knox College, propelling them to an impressive 11-6 record by early April.
However, it was during pivotal match-ups against regional rivals like Indiana State University and Illinois State University, that the team truly shined. Victories over these opponents bolstered the '74 team's win-loss record and solidified their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in collegiate baseball circles. April of 1974 saw the Leathernecks embark on a relentless winning streak, sweeping doubleheaders and pummeling opponents with a combination of power-hitting and strategic base running. Their triumphs against Monmouth College and the University of Missouri-St. Louis showcased their resilience and determination to excel on every front.
As May 1974 dawned, the stakes grew higher, with an NCAA postseason bid hanging in the balance. A crucial doubleheader against the highly ranked SIU-Edwardsville (#4) tested their resolve. Still, the Leathernecks emerged with a split, solidifying their position in the national rankings and securing an at-large invitation to NCAA postseason.
The ensuing weeks witnessed the team's historic foray into postseason play, marking WIU's inaugural appearance in the NCAA Division II Mideast Regional Tournament. Despite facing tough opponents, the Leathernecks displayed unwavering determination, clawing their way through elimination games and battling to the brink of a College World Series berth. Ultimately, the 1974 team's journey culminated in a heart-wrenching defeat in the championship game, falling short by a mere run in extra innings. Despite the outcome, the 1974 Leatherneck Baseball team left a monumental mark on the university's history, setting records that endure to this day and inspiring future generations of Leatherneck athletes.
Join us on Saturday, May 4, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1974 team during the Leatherneck's game against Little Rock at 2:00 p.m. at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
