Leathernecks Drop Series Finale

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois's comeback fell short as they dropped the final game of the series 12-8 against Tennessee Tech. WIU moves to 6-18 overall and 2-4 in Ohio Valley play.

Western Illinois offense stuck right away in Saturday's ball game. The Leathernecks led off the inning with a walk by Chris Hege. Hege advanced to second base on a wild pitch, giving WIU a man in scoring position. Maxton Polad took advantage by sending a ball right back up in the middle as WIU took a 1-0 lead.

Tennessee Tech responded in the bottom half of the inning as they tied the game at 1-1. The Leathernecks would push away from a tie ball game in the second inning as Brock Lummus led off with a double. The Leathernecks did not take long to bring him around to score as J.R. Heavilin launched a ball down the right field line and over the fence for a two-run home run, giving Western Illinois a 3-1 lead.

Tennessee gained separation in the third inning as they struck for seven runs, putting themselves in front 8-3. The Golden Eagles' offense did not slow down, adding three more runs in the fourth quarter as they pushed their lead out to eight, 11-3.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Leathernecks mounted a little momentum in the sixth inning. A double by Adam Juran started the inning. Kyree Alexander was hit by a pitch, and they both moved 90 feet on a wild pitch. Lummus brought in the first of five runs the Leathernecks would score as he singled to right field, bringing in Juran. WIU kept the train moving as Heavilin picked up his third RBI of the day, singling to right field. Trevor Leon reloaded the bases with a single of his own, and Jackson Horn picked up an RBI while wearing a pitch. Chris Hege drove in a run on an RBI ground out as WIU cut the lead to 11-7. Grant Palmer put the final touches on a five-run sixth inning as he lined a ball, bringing in Leon.

Tennessee Tech put their final run on the scoreboard in the eighth inning as Western Illinois fell 12-8.
