WIU Falls in Opening Game of the Series

MACOMB, IL – The Western Illinois baseball team fell to cross-state rival Eastern Illinois 4-1 on Friday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The Leathernecks move to 6-19 on the season, and 2-5 overall in Ohio Valley Conference play.

Eastern Illinois struck first on Friday afternoon as a solo home run in the top of the first inning kicked off the scoring. The Leathernecks responded in the second inning with a run to tie the game at 1-1. Brock Lummus earned a free pass to first base as a fastball got inside on him, pelting him on the back. After earning his free pass, Lummus advanced to second base on a ground ball produced by J.R. Heavilin. The Leathernecks brought Lummus around as Trevor Leon lined a ball over the shortstop's head and into left field.

The offenses stalled for both teams as the pitching started to settle in. Jason Buhl was lights out as he performed a seven-inning seven strikeout performance, allowing just two runs. EIU added a run in the sixth as they led 2-1.

Down 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth, WIU put together their best chance at working a rally. Chirs Hege started the inning by reaching base on an error by the Panthers shortstop. He moved 90 more feet on a Panthers wild pitch, putting himself in scoring position. Kyree Alexander followed Hege, hitting a soft dribbler between the third basemen and shortstop as he reached on an infield base hit, moving Hege to third base. The Leathernecks would not put the runners in motion the rest of the inning as a strikeout followed by a double play ended the WIU scoring threat.

Western Illinois totaled four different base runners on the day. Kyree Alexander led the way with two hits and a walk reaching base in three out of his four at-bats. Trevor Leon reached first base safely with a single and a hit-by-pitch. Brock Lummus came around to score the lone Leatherneck run as a pitch hit him, and Adam Juran's only hit was a double down the left-field line.

Due to potential weather on Sunday, the Leathernecks and Panthers will finish their three-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
