WIU Track and Field Open Outdoor Season

Leathernecks compete at WashU and Illinois State this week

MACOMB -- The Western Illinois men's and women's track teams begin the outdoor season this week with a pair of meets.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the Leatherneck distance specialists head to Washington University in St. Louis to run in the Washington Distance Carnival. On Saturday, the rest of the squad visit Illinois State for the Redbird Challenge.

On Thursday night, Leathernecks Logan Lommel and Aylana Cezar open the season at Washington, competing in the fast heat of the steeplechase. The pair are both close to program records in the event. Running continues Thursday night with the fast heats of the women's and women's 5k and 10k. On Friday, the event continues at noon.

Distance runners Robert Perry, Logan Beckmier, Mohammed Baghati, Madison Trevena, Cezar, Lommel, Maleigha Huston, and Isaac Jones are all scheduled to compete.

On Saturday, the rest of the roster heads to Illinois State for the Redbird Challenge. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with running events starting at noon.

THIS SPRING: This weekend is not the lone busy weekend for the Leatherneck track and field program. Western Illinois is at four meets this spring before the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Meet in Charleston, Illinois on May 9-11.

After this weekend, WIU is off until April 13 when they are at the SIUE Cougar Classic. Western Illinois follows that with an April 20 meet at Iowa in the Musco Twilight. The Leathernecks remain in Iowa on April 25-27, running at the prestigious Drake Relays. Western Illinois closes out the regular season May 3 at the Iowa State Alumni Open.

CARRYOVER FROM INDOOR: The Leathernecks closed out the indoor season on February 22 with big performances. The Leatherneck women finished third overall, scoring 78 points. The 78 points were the most for the program since scoring 122.5 in 2007. The third-place finish was also the best for the WIU women's indoor program since 2007 when the squad was third.

On the men's side, Western Illinois finished fifth, scoring 48 points. Little Rock won the meet with 180 points. The 48 points for the Leatherneck men were the most since 2014 when the team finished with 78.
