Leathernecks Fall Late Against Little Rock

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's basketball snapped their three-game win streak as they fell to Arkansas-Little Rock 50-41 inside Western Hall. WIU falls to 15-7 on the season and 6-5 in Ohio Valley play.

Western Illinois' offense got rolling early as Raegan McCowan got her first two points on a midrange jump shot, giving WIU an early 2-0 lead. Allie Meadows followed McCowan's jumper with a left-wing three and a fast break layup as WIU led 7-0 with 7:52 left in the quarter. Western Illinois finished their opening 9-0 run with Alissa Dins left-handed lay up. The defense would be the name of the game in the middle part of the first quarter, as WIU only allowed two points through the first seven and a half minutes. Ahead 11-4, Dins and McCowan added another pair of baskets as WIU would score 15 first-quarter points and lead 15-6 after one.

Both teams' defenses increased the intensity in the second quarter as WIU was held to just six points. All the Leatherneck points came from the charity stripe as they finished the quarter a perfect 6-6 and led 21-19 after the first half.

Scoring picked back up in the second half as McCowan had four straight points for WIU to start the quarter as the Leathernecks trailed 26-25. Western Illinois trailed for the majority of the third quarter as they found themselves down 34-28 with just under three minutes left in the quarter. McCowan would then drive right and knock down a mid-range shot, sparking a Leatherneck 9-0 run. Anna Deets and Addi Brownfield pushed the 9-0 run, knocking down free throws, and Mallory McDermott capped it off with a three from the left wing. WIU's late-quarter offense helped them head into the fourth quarter with a 37-36 lead.

Fourth-quarter action was slow as WIU got baskets from Brownfield and McCowan, but they were held scoreless for the final 6 minutes as they fell 50-41.

Western Illinois outrebounded the Trojans 45-33 and 13-6 on the offensive side. Raegan McCowan posted her fourth straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Alissa Dins added a double-digit rebound, corralling 10 of her own.

Western Illinois is back in action on Saturday as they welcome the Skyhawks of UT Martin into Western Hall. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
