Western Illinois Falls on the Road to Southern Indiana

MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois women's basketball team fell on the road to the University of Southern Indiana 81-61. WIU moves to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Raegan McCowan played a crucial role in getting WIU's offense started with a mid-range jump shot, tying the game at 2-2. Despite initially falling behind 10-3, WIU fought back with three-pointers from Addi Brownfield and Allie Meadows, bringing the deficit within one 10-9. Meadows later put WIU back in front with a right-handed floater 11-10.

McCowan's impressive performance continued as she made a jump shot and completed a three-point play from the free-throw line, putting WIU ahead 14-13. The team extended its lead to 18-15 by the end of the first quarter, thanks to contributions from Anna Deets and McCowan.

In the second quarter, WIU's offense remained strong, with Jasmine Nichols contributing a layup to extend the lead to five (20-15). Despite Southern Indiana cutting the lead down to one multiple times, Kaylen Reed's free throws helped maintain a five-point advantage. Mallory McDermott's backdoor layup was the last basket for WIU in the first half, as they trailed 35-28.

WIU started chipping away at the deficit in the third quarter, with McCowan's put-back layup and Deets' three-pointer cutting the margin to four (37-33). However, USI extended their lead to 61-43 by the end of the quarter.

Trailing 64-43, WIU mounted a 5-0 run, with McCowan and Deets contributing to narrow the gap. Despite USI extending their lead to 81-50, WIU ended the game on an 11-0 run. Lily Randgaard's free throws, Carla Flores' three-pointer, and Jasmine Nichols' free throws contributed to the comeback. Randgaard finished the run with a personal 5-0 run, including a corner three and two more free throws, but WIU ultimately fell short, losing 81-61.

McCowan led WIU with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Lily Randgaard and Anna Deets contributed eight points. WIU outrebounded USI 43-41, including a 14-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
