Leathernecks Fall at Home

Mallory McDermott scored 14 points, Western Illinois concludes its regular season at home next weekend.

MACOMB, Ill.  – Western Illinois women's basketball played Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18), falling 71-57 to the St. Thomas Tommies at Western Hall. With two games remaining in the regular season, Western is now 10-17 and 5-11 against Summit League competition.

"I credit St. Thomas - they are really peaking at the right time and I felt like we were on our heels all night… We missed some shots we've been making the last couple of weeks and then the next thing it was a six-point deficit, then it became ten or 12, then it just kept going from there," associate head coach Dan Chapla said. "Credit St. Thomas, they came in here ready to play from the jump and got a good road win for their team."

Both teams went back and fourth in the game's opening minutes, with the Leathernecks taking an early 5-4 lead after Elizabeth Lutz connected on a three pointer nearly two minutes into the game. St. Thomas would go on an 11-0 run later in the quarter to build out an 11-point advantage after the first 10 minutes of action. Western responded with a quick 8-2 run of its own in the latter portion of the second quarter but the Tommies still held a 13-point lead at halftime.

After UST out-scored Western in the third, Western's offense out-scored St. Thomas 17-9 in the fourth. WIU opened the final quarter on a 9-3 run and Jayda Adams connected on two triples in the period as the Tommies rode out a 71-57 victory.

Mallory McDermott led the team in scoring with 14 points, shooting 5-13 (38.5%) from the field and making two shots from deep. Kennedy Flanagan scored a season-high nine points to go with four rebounds, while Anna Deets scored seven. Jayda Adams' three-point shooting led to the graduate student finishing with six points and three steals in a season-high nine minutes, while Jada Thorpe also scored six. Alissa Dins and Carla Flores also grabbed four rebounds while Allie Meadows paired four points with a team-leading four assists.

"I was just being confident and my teammates were getting me nice looks," McDermott said of her performance. "Carla hit me on a great back door, and we talked about how St. Thomas is a switching team, so I just kept cutting and moving."

Western Illinois shot 19-51 (36.5%) from the field and 11-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line, connecting on eight triples and finishing with 14 assists. Led by McDermott, the WIU bench scored 39 points, while the Leatherneck defense forced 19 Tommy turnovers and converted those into seven points on the fast break and six on turnovers.

The Leathernecks play host to North Dakota and North Dakota State next week, before heading up to Sioux Falls, S.D. to play in the 2023 Summit League Tournament.

"We had some great momentum coming from last week," McDermott said. "A little bit of a lull today but it's nice to have two more home games before we get to the tournament and I think that'll help us.

"This team has been great in terms of responding so we just have to get back after it and know that there's still a couple of weeks left," Chapla added. "We're going to be in the tournament regardless of what happens. We're probably going to play St. Thomas to be quite honest to and that will motivate us."
