Leatherneck Tennis goes 1-2 at Redhawk Invite

Western Illinois opens season with win over Tennessee Southern

The Western Illinois women's tennis team opened the season going 1-2 at the SEMO Redhawk Invite on Friday and Saturday.

The Leathernecks opened the invite, taking down Tennessee Southern 5-2 on Friday. After splitting the two doubles matches with SEMO Friday night, Western Illinois fell to the Redhawks 6-0 in singles on Saturday and SIU-E 6-1 on Saturday.

Against SIU-E, Anna-Evelina Trush earned the lone Leatherneck victory, scoring a 7-6, 1-6, 13-11 tiebreaker win. In the SEMO match, the doubles team of Paige Grice and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza picked up a 6-3 victory.

On Friday, WIU had a strong start to the weekend, winning 5-2. Grice (6-1, 6-0), Trush 6-1, 6-2) Aina Cortina-Pou (6-1, 6-4) and Agatha Carbonell (6-0, 6-1) all won in singles play. The Leathernecks also earned the doubles point, taking two of three matches. Paige Grice and Lara Rossetto Diniz de Souza teamed up for another win (6-1) while Maria Rybka and Cotina-Pou also paired up for a victory (7-6 {7-2}).

Western Illinois closes out the fall schedule on October 14, playing at Quincy.
