WIU Winning Streak Grows to Four

WIU goes 2-0 in day one

NEW ORLEANS, La – Western Illinois (4-5) kept the winning ways going on day one of the New Orleans Invitations defeating Texas Southern (0-6) and Southern (0-9). The four-game winning streak is the longest winning streak since 2007 for the Leathernecks.

WIU VS Texas Southern
Western Illinois took down the Texas Southern Tigers in four sets (25-10, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17). The Leathernecks came into set one on a mission. The match would start with an administrative red card on Texas Southern. Western took the free point and ran with it. Seven straight offensive points from the Leathernecks would open an 8-0 lead. Brittany Wulf, Elizabeth Ziegler, and Grace Kremer would all have two kills in the first nine points. WIU would keep the foot on the gas pedal as they would, cruise to a 25-10 opening set victory. Western would have five service aces in the opening set. Set two consisted of back-and-forth action to start the match. With the score at 4-2, Kennedy Bauer would help WIU go on a 5-1 run and start pulling away. Texas Southern would claw their way back to an 11-9 score. WIU would use a 7-2 run and pull away for a 25-18 victory. Set three would see the score tied 12 times with six different lead changes. Western Illinois would find themselves down 8-6 before a 5-0 run would have them back in front 11-8. The Tigers responded with a run of their own to tie it at 11. Both teams would trade points until Texas Southern would pull away late in the set and claim the 25-23 victory. After falling behind early in set four, WIU would use a 6-2 and 12-3 run to take full control of the match. Aubrey Putman would give WIU a match point with a kill. The Tigers would fight off five match points before Maggie Craker would send a ball over on two and get the final kill of the match.

WIU VS Southern University
WIU kept the success from the early game into the evening match as they downed Southern University in four sets (25-18, 28-30, 25-21, 25-22). Set one was all Western Illinois. The Leathernecks jumped out to a 14-3 lead. The Jaguars tried to creep back into the match with an 8-1 run to bring it to a 15-11 game. The Leathernecks would not let Southern get any closer as they would close out the first set on a Wulf kill to take it 25-18. The second set would turn out to be the longest set for WIU so far this season. The Leathernecks would find themselves down 24-18 before battling off six set points to tie things up at 24 a piece. Both teams would trade points before Southern would end on a 3-0 run to take set two 30-28. Set three would see Southern be on the front foot. The Jaguars started on a 6-0 run before the Leathernecks scored their first point off a Wulf kill. Western Illinois would score 11 out of the next 16 points, and the match was tied at 11. WIU would continue its dominance as they would go on another huge 9-3 run to take a 20-14 lead. WIU would not look back as they would take set three 25-21. The fourth set had all the excitement you hope for at an invitational. Both teams battled right off the bat, switching who would have the lead. Southern would start to pull ahead with a 4-0 run to take the 17-13 advantage. WIU had a response that a quick 3-0 centered around two Aubrey Putman kills brought Western right back into the set. Southern would get up to 22 points before WIU would make their final move. Down 22-21, WIU would score the final four points and win set four 25-22.
