Western Men Drop Season Opener

Visitors score in the 75th minute, Leathernecks play again Monday.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team played Thursday (Aug. 25), falling 1-0 to the Eagles of Central Methodist at John MacKenzie Alumni Field in a hotly contested game. The Leathernecks will play again Monday (Aug. 29), hosting Drake.

Thursday's matchup was a game of debuts, as 11 newcomers made their official Western Illinois debuts: Liam Gainey, Oscar Olingdal, Breddo Hypolite and Marco Presta started, with Luis Rodrigues, Tyreke Moore, Gabe Chapa, Armin Dedic, Arber Shala, Jack Schwering and Adam Miller all making appearances off the bench. Presta, along with Alex Flowers and Kyle Owen, played the full 90 minutes.

Western nearly took the lead early into the match, as Hypolite found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper after high pressure led to Western getting the ball. His left-footed shot to the right of the 'keeper was within range, and the game remained level in the 4th minute.

Alex Flowers' performance was the story of the first half, as the junior goalkeeper made several highlight-reel saves to keep the game scoreless. In the 15th minute, he made a triple safe after saving one shot, stopping the rebound, and then saving yet another rebound shot from distance; 11 minutes later, Flowers sprawled out to his right to stop a direct free kick that was destined for the top corner. He finished with six saves in the game.

The second period of action was a more balanced affair but Central Methodist found a breakthrough, scoring in the 76th minute to take a one-goal advantage. Despite multiple shots from Western Illinois that were saved or blocked, the tying goal never came and the game finished in favor of the Eagles.

Gainey, Hypolite, Ryan DeBois, Muazu Sagir and Damian Rincon combined for five shots (three on target), with the team taking two corner kicks and drawing 13 Eagle fouls. Western's attack was disciplined, finishing with just one offside call and earning three corner kicks.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Monday (Aug. 29), hosting Drake. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
