Leathernecks, Bulldogs Play to "No Contest"

After lightning in the area delayed the game over an hour, a lack of light ended it 30 minutes early.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's soccer team played on Monday (Aug. 29), facing Drake University in a game that finished 1-1.After the initial kick-off was delayed due to inclement weather, game officials called the match off in the 58th minute due to a lack of light at John MacKenzie Alumni Field, and it was deemed a "no contest."
 
The Leathernecks (0-1) and Bulldogs (1-0) didn't kick the game off until 6:24 p.m. after thunderstorms in the area forced the game into a delay. Despite the suspension in play, Western Illinois came out quickly, as Breddo Hypolite found himself open at the far post and finished to give Western Illinois 1-0 advantage in the fourth minute of action. Drake equalized in the 32nd minute and the game would remain level until its conclusion.
 
As a team, Western Illinois outshot the Bulldogs 6-5, putting three shots on frame and earing three corner kicks while drawing five fouls. 17 different Leathernecks appeared in the match while Alex Flowers made two saves.
 
Despite the game going nearly 60 minutes, Monday's result finishes as a "no contest," per NCAA rules.
 
According to the 2022 and 2023 NCAA Soccer Rules Book, "the game shall be considered 'no contest' if it has not progressed to 70 minutes. A 'no contest' does not count, and all normal statistics are nullified except for violent behavior II, fighting and assault on referee red cards , which are subject to associated penalties in Rule 12."
 
Western Illinois is back in action this Friday (Sep. 2), hitting the road to face Purdue Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, Ind. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
