Colley and Wuestefeld take home wins at Joey Haines Invitational

| By:

Colley's time set a new meet record in the 800m.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO.- Western Illinois track and field wrapped up the second meet of the outdoor season, taking part in the Joey Haines Invitational, hosted by Southeast Missouri State University. Fans can view full results from Cape Girardeau here.

"This was another great outing for the team this weekend. We've been working hard in practice, so most of the team is competing on tired legs," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw. "Despite that, they competed hard and represented WIU well."

Paulina Wuestefeld was the highlight for the women's team for the second straight meet, taking first place in the 1500m with a time of 4:44.06. Wuestefeld also took ninth in the 800m by setting a new personal record at 2:19.17.

"Paulina has had an exceptional start to her outdoor season," said Trey Brokaw. "Her 1500 time wasn't quite a personal best, but there is so much more importance in winning an event. If she continues to race for wins, the big personal bests will come."

Madison Trevena also competed in the 1500m and took eighth with a time of 4:52.31. Maleigha Huston earned fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:14.70, which is a three-second improvement from her time at the ESU Relays.

Briza Dure and Zwandi Harrison both took top-10 finishes in the 200m and the 400m. In the 200m, Dure took fifth with a time of 25.71 seconds, and Harrison took ninth with a time of 26.14 seconds. Dure finished sixth in the 400m (59.19 seconds), while Harrison placed just behind at seventh (59.24 seconds).

The squad of Ackeen Colley, Richard Brown, Lucas Hofer, and Logan Lommel all shined in 800m for WIU. Colley took home a first-place finish for the Leathernecks, ending with a time of 1:50.04 in his first 800m of the outdoor season. The time set a new meet record in the 800m for the Joey Haines Invitational. Brown wasn't far off from Colley, taking second in the 800m with a time of 1:52.03. Hofer took fourth with a time of 1:53.13. Lommel placed eighth with a time less than a second behind Hofer at 1:53.88.

The squad competed together in the 4x400 relay and took second place with a time of 3:17.09.

"Ackeen not only won the men's 800 meters on his birthday, but he also set a new Joey Haines meet record. The pace was a little too slow in the first half for a personal best, but again, it was another great opportunity for the men to practice competing," said Trey Brokaw. Richard Brown closed well for second. Lucas Hofer and Logan Lommel round out a quartet of middle-distance runners that could be highly competitive in a 4 x 800 and distance medley at Drake Relays later this spring."

Track and field will enjoy a weekend off from competing before heading to Normal, Ill., for the Redbird Challenge Friday (April 15) through Saturday (April 16), hosted by Illinois State. Although the team won't be competing this upcoming weekend, they will be helping host the 2022 Lee Calhoun Relays.

"This coming weekend, we host the 2022 Lee Calhoun Relays for local area high schools. The event starts at 11:00am. It will be a much deserved weekend off for the college athletes," said Trey Brokaw. "Two weeks from now we will compete at the Redbird Challenge hosted by Illinois State University."
