Juran Drives In Career High Four Runs In Loss To Mavericks

Eighth inning home runs continue to haunt Western Illinois in the series.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (2-12, 4-31) couldn't rally in its Saturday contest with the Omaha Mavericks (9-5, 18-18), dropping game two by a final score of 6-5. After hitting two home runs in the eighth inning yesterday, Omaha used a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth to win game two of the three-game series.

Western Illinois was the one producing home runs early on. After a single from Jack Sievers and a walk from Chase VanDerGinst, Adam Juran crushed a no-doubter home run to left to give the Leathernecks a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Chandler Fochs kept the Mavericks off the board in the first three innings but ran into issues in the fourth. The inning began with an error by WIU and a double by Omaha's next batter brought in their first run. The next man up for the Mavericks lined a single to right-center to drive in another run, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double, clearing the bases. Omaha tied the game up at 3-3 during the next at-bat with a solo home run. A fielding error by Western Illinois in the top of the fifth allowed Omaha to score another run to take a 4-3 lead.

VanDerGinst got into scoring position on a leadoff walk and sacrifice bunt from Derek Botaletto in the bottom of the sixth, giving Juran a game-tying RBI opportunity. Juran managed to drop a single just out the reach of Omaha's shortstop in shallow left to score VanDerGinst and tie the game at 4-4.

The first two Maverick hitters struck out to begin the top of the eight, but a two-out single up the middle kept the inning alive. Omaha took advantage of the opportunity, hitting a two-run home run to take a 6-4 lead. Dillon Sears got all the way to third on a dropped fly ball by Omaha in the bottom of the ninth and managed to score on a wild pitch to get WIU back within a run. Sievers delivered a two-out single, but a strikeout ended hopes of a comeback to give Omaha game two.

Adam Juran was the story for the Leatherneck offense, driving in a career-high four RBIs. Juran's three-run homer is his second home run of the season. His four-RBI game is the third time a Leatherneck has driven in four runs in a single contest this season.

Three other Leathernecks ended the game with two hits each. Nick Mitchell finished 2-5 for his 12th multi-hit game this season. Jack Sievers once again produced in the middle of the order, going 2-4 with a walk and run scored. Max Slavens made his seventh appearance of the season and went 2-3 with a walk.

Western Illinois concludes its series with Omaha tomorrow at 1 p.m.
