Early Home Runs Not Enough Versus Omaha

Western Illinois hit a pair of bombs in the first three innings, but Omaha still took the series finale.

MACOMB, ILL.- Western Illinois baseball (2-13, 4-32) had an early two-run lead in its series finale versus the Omaha Mavericks (10-5, 19-18), but the Mavericks once again scored big runs late to take Sunday's contest 11-5. Omaha scored six unanswered runs in the final three innings to take game three of the series.

Western Illinois began the game surrendering a pair of walks, which Omaha turned into two runs on a single and sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Gage Cruz had the first big hit of the day for WIU in the second, blasting a solo home run to dead center to cut the Mavericks' lead in half. A Max Slavens walk and Nick Mitchell infield single gave the Leathernecks two baserunners in the third. Dillon Sears would then crush a three-run home run to right to put WIU ahead 4-2.

Omaha answered with a single and a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth. After a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, an error by Western Illinois allowed the runner on third to score to cut the Leathernecks' lead down to one.

The Mavericks began the fifth inning with three straight singles to tie the game up 4-4. A flyout to center advanced Omaha's two baserunners to second and third, setting up a sacrifice fly during the next at-bat, giving Omaha a 5-4 lead.

Sears gave Western Illinois life in the bottom of the fifth, hitting a single to right and advancing all the way to third on a fielding error. Kory Olsen brought Sears home after dropping a single into shallow left to tie the game at 5-5.

Omaha took the lead back in the top of the seventh, starting the inning off with a solo home run to center to take a 6-5 lead. After an error by WIU, a double and single scored two more Mavericks runs, putting Omaha up 8-5. Omaha added a pair of runs in the eighth on a wild pitch and single, and a ninth-inning solo home run brought Omaha's run total to 11.

Dillon Sears had the big day at the plate in Sunday's ballgame, going 2-4 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. The three-run bomb is Sears' third career home run. Gage Cruz's solo home run in the second gave him his team-leading third home run of the season.
