Baseball Drops Tuesday Matchup At Iowa

The Leathernecks shift their focus to St. Thomas this weekend.

IOWA CITY, IOWA- Western Illinois baseball (4-33) fell in its mid-week matchup in Iowa City to the Iowa Hawkeyes (24-13) by a final score of 11-1 in seven innings. A run in the fourth got Western Illinois back within two, but Iowa responded with eight unanswered runs to take Tuesday's ballgame.

Iowa got on the scoreboard right away in the first inning. A one-out triple set up an RBI groundout to put Iowa up 1-0. A pair of doubles in the third inning brought in another Hawkeye baserunner to give Iowa a 2-0 lead. Iowa loaded the bases later in the inning on a walk and hit by pitch, and a fielding error allowed Iowa to score its third run of the contest.

Dillon Sears led the top of the fourth off with a single and advanced to third after a pair of wild pitches. After a Toby Allred walk, Jack Sievers lined a single through the middle of the infield to score Sears to get the Leathernecks on the board. WIU wanted more, but a double play got Iowa out of the inning with just the one run allowed.

The Hawkeyes got the run back immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Iowa led the inning off with a single and scored the baserunner on a throwing error to go ahead 4-1. A pair of RBI singles later in the fourth scored two more runs, giving the Hawkeyes a 6-1 lead.

WIU surrendered three straight walks to begin the bottom of the fifth, and a sacrifice fly followed to put Iowa up 7-1. A wild pitch during the next at-bat scored Iowa's eighth run of the evening. A three-run home run capped off the scoring for Iowa to gain a ten-run advantage.

Jack Sievers ended the game 1-2 and drove in his 12th RBI of the season. Dillon Sears finished 1-3 and scored his team-leading 21st run of the year. Nick Mitchell went 1-3 to extend his hitting streak to seven games and on-base streak to 17.

Western Illinois will be back in action beginning Friday (April 29) for a three-game series at St. Thomas. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
